Men in Blue continued their domination in the World Cup 2023. They win 6 out of 6 games and move to the top of the points table, while the defending champions can only hide their face after having lost five of their 6 matches, glueing to the bottom of the table.
For now, this is AkshayaKrishna Polya signing off on behalf of my co-commentator Akshay Bhide, who, alongside our scorers/analysts Zeeshan Naiyer and Raju Khariya, brought you all the live-action of this enthralling fixture. We will meet again. Until then, it's cheers!
This is the 59th win for India in World Cups. They
move above New Zealand who have got 58. Australia sit at the top position,
having won 73 games in World Cups.
Rohit Sharma (India Captain): "It was that time. Test of character, and I think the boys have come on the top. All of the experienced players came to the fore and stood up at the right time.
Looking at how the tournament has gone for us, batting second for five straight times, batting first today was a different challenge. All of England's bowlers bowled well, especially with the new ball. We were not great with the bat and lost wickets regularly. Losing 3 wickets around the Powerplay, it was tough going for us. You have to then create a long partnership, which we did. But a lot of them threw their wickets away, including me, at the end (shares a chuckle). We needed to put a total on the board in which we could manage something. At the halfway stage, I thought that we were around 30 runs short.
It's not something you see every day, especially when the total you had on the board. Special performance from the bowlers. Seamers first and then the spinners. All of the seamers are now well experienced and have given us the confidence to do well despite the low total. Our seamers exploited the conditions very well, there was swing and lateral movement available.
I think we have a good balance now. Three seamers and two quality spinners. Seamers bring the experience, while the spinners have plenty of quality. When you have a bowling line up like that, it's important that the batters give them something to bowl at and show their magic."
Most bowled dismissals by India in an ODI match:
6 vs Sri Lanka in Sharjah, 1986 6 vs West Indies in Kolkata, 1993 6 vs England in Lucknow - Today
Most Games Lost by a Defending Champion in an edition of ODI World Cup : 4 - Australia in 1992 4* - England in 2023
Jos Buttler (England Captain): "Yeah. Very disappointed. At the halfway stage, we fancied ourselves to chase 230 but it was the same old story with the bat.
The gut feeling was we wanted to chase, whether dew came or not. Our bowling has been great but again the batting was disappointing. I think we have to be committed to that. I felt I had to stay there as the Indian bowlers were bowling well and had to soak in the pressure. I tried to stay there but you have to be committed and it wasn't to be.
Some tough players in there but we are a long way from our best.
Excellent. Great start in the powerplay. The guys found some movement and some invariable bounce. The ground fielding was also brilliant. That time, it felt like today was the day but it wasn't to be.
(On Champions Trophy 2025 Qualification) We are aware of that and it's still lots to play for. Thank you."
