A statement performance from the defending champions to kick off IPL 2026 in style! Debutant Jacob Duffy was sensational with the ball, setting the tone early. Phil Salt produced a moment of brilliance in the field, pulling off a stunning catch to dismiss Ishan Kishan.
With the bat, it was pure domination — Virat Kohli, Devdutt Padikkal and Rajat Patidar dismantled the SRH bowling attack as the target of 202 was chased down with a staggering 26 balls to spare. SRH will need to reassess their bowling unit ahead of the next game, especially in the absence of Pat Cummins, where the lack of experience was evident.
Up next, we move to the iconic Wankhede Stadium as Mumbai Indians take on Kolkata Knight Riders tomorrow. For now, this is Pritam Dey signing off on behalf of my co-commentators Ajay Pal Singh & AkshayaKrishna Polya who, along with scorers/analysts Manish Bishnoi & Paras Yadav and statistician Aman brought all the updates of this clash. Stay tuned for more cricketing action from around the world. BYE BYE👋
Jacob Duffy (POTM): "[First experience of IPL] Yeah, awesome. It was a great experience. Heard a lot about the RCB, and yeah, hell of a way to start the campaign. I thought it was a pretty well-rounded team performance.
[On his role] Yeah, I am just keeping the big fella's (Josh Hazlewood) seat warm. I guess, new ball does a bit here. It can get a little bit tricky later on. I was lucky enough to pick up a few wickets early, and then the skipper just kept giving me the ball. And as a bonus, I got to walk off after finishing my spell, a good day overall.
(On bowling plans, hit the deck?) We spoke a lot about lengths and what works on this surface. Josh had a really good season here last year, so it was about building on what he did well and trying to replicate that in my own way.
(On learning from the T20 World Cup) I guess I had a basic template coming into that tournament. Yeah, I am sick of bowling at Ishan Kishan and Abhishek. That is for sure. But this is a different kind of wicket. I haven’t seen this kind of bounce in the last couple of months. It’s not the easiest place for bowlers, so I’m just learning on the run.
[On who's call it was to bowl 4 on the trot] Nah, just Rajat said, mate you go. When the ball is hard, it is the best time to bowl.
Player of the Match: Jacob Duffy
Rajat Patidar (Royal Challengers Bengaluru Captain): "(On the win and team performance) 100%! The way the boys played. First of all, it was the season opener and the way everybody chipped in and did it for the team, I think that was a very positive sign for us.
(On Jacob Duffy's bowling performance) Yes, the way Duffy bowled. He was playing the first game, and the way he bowled, I think that was really impressive. Abhinandan was also playing his first game. Duffy picked up the wickets of Abhishek and Head. The way he took those wickets, I think that was the turning point.
(About Devdutt Padikkal and Kohli's partnership, and attacking batting) It is not a policy, but we are assessing the wicket and playing accordingly. The wicket was good to bat on. The way Kohli and Padikkal played their innings, I think that laid a solid base for the other batters. So we’ll just continue to do that.
(About Virat Kohli) No words for him. The way, every time he goes in, and when the team is chasing, he is the number one batter. He was there till the end.
(About Phil Salt's catching, especially about grabbing a one-handed stunner to dismiss Ishan Kishan) It was a terrific catch from Phil Salt. Even I was surprised. He is a very good fielder. I have seen him take such catches. He is an amazing fielder.
(About his batting, long hair) I was trying to add as much impact with the bat as possible. I just wanted to see to chase quickly. The look is always there, and now, it is all about impact."
