The spotlight shifts to another high-energy clash in the Pakistan Super League 2026 as debutants RawalPindiz take on the ever-competitive Peshawar Zalmi in the third fixture of the tournament at Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore, on Saturday, in what marks a fascinating meeting of fresh ambition and established pedigree.

These two sides are led by Pakistan's two most popular cricketers, Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan, who once used to be the regular opening pair of the national side in white-ball cricket.

RawalPindiz, playing their first-ever PSL season, bring with them an air of intrigue and unpredictability. Software firm Walee Technologies purchased the franchise for a record PKR 2.45 billion last month. The side was initially named 'Pindiz' but then after PCB's objection, it was changed to 'RawalPindiz'.

Led by Mohammad Rizwan, the newly formed side will be eager to make an immediate impact in the tournament. Having emerged from a major franchise reshuffle ahead of PSL 2026, the Pindiz represent a new identity in the league, and early performances will be crucial in shaping their campaign. Their strength is expected to lie in discipline and structure, with Rizwan’s leadership offering stability at the top.

Apart from Rizwan, the side comprises Kiwi hard-hitter Daryl Mitchell, who is among the most expensive players in this year's PSL. However, the side's pace attack will be solely dependent on Mohammad Amir and Naseem Shah.

The franchise has made some recent changes to its squad. Usman Khawaja comes in place of middle-order batter Laurie Evans, while Kiwi all-rounder Cole McConchie replaces Australia's Jake Fraser-McGurk after the latter decided to opt out of PSL 2026. Pacer Zaman Khan has suffered a nasty shoulder injury and he has been replaced by Jalat Khan.

In contrast, Peshawar Zalmi enter the contest with experience and consistency on their side. Captained by Babar Azam, Zalmi have long been one of the most reliable teams in PSL history and lifted the title in 2017. Except for the last season, Zalmi managed to enter the playoffs in all PSL editions. In 2025, the side finished second-last with four wins from ten games.

The side has a good set of all-rounders in the form of Aaron Hardie, Michael Bracewell, Iftikhar Ahmed, and Aamer Jamal but their captain's poor form in T20s will be an area of concern for them. Babar had such an ordinary T20 World Cup last month that he was dropped for Pakistan's final Super 8 game. Also, their three Bangladeshi players, namely Tanzid Hasan, Nahid Rana and Shoriful Islam, might leave the tournament midway because of a white-ball series against New Zealand that starts from April 17.

English batter James Vince has opted out of PSL due to personal reasons and Zalmi have replaced him with Zimbabwe opener Brian Bennett.

With one side chasing identity and the other carrying legacy, this clash promises intrigue, intensity, and perhaps the first real glimpse of how the PSL 2026 hierarchy might take shape.
