114 All-Out - has been a number that both Bangladesh and Pakistan want to forget quickly before they step onto the field at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium, Dhaka, for the third and final ODI of the series on Sunday (March 15).
What is the significance of 114? Well, Pakistan were on the receiving end of an express spell from Nahid Rana in the series opener and got bundled out for 114 before Bangladesh made light work of the run chase to take a 1-0 lead on Wednesday. Then, the Bangla Tigers were crushed for 114 in the second ODI while chasing a big target in a rain-curtailed second innings on Friday.
The Men in Green's thumping 128-run win has taken this series to the decider. The Shaheen Shah Afridi-led side was again put into bat first by the hosts, but this time around, Pakistan batted well. Sahibzada Farhan and Maaz Sadaqat set the foundation with a 100-plus opening stand. Youngster Sadaqat top-scored with a quickfire 46-ball 75. Shamyl Hussain failed to make an impact again after Farhan got a start but didn't make it count.
Pakistan lost their top three in quick succession after that dominating start. Mohammad Rizwan and Salman Ali Agha brought their experience into play to rebuild the sinking ship. Pakistan were cruising at 231/3 before Mehidy Hasan Miraz ran out Agha on 64 in a manner that escalated the sportsman spirit talks.
Post the game, Mehidy said that he was within his rights to run out Agha as per cricketing rules, while the latter stated that he would have done things differently if he found himself in such a situation. At the same time, Agha has been officially reprimanded and handed one demerit point for his reactions post that dismissal.
That run out turned things around in Bangladesh's favour with Pakistan collapsing to 274 all-out in the blink of an eye.
The pace-bowling trio - Taskin Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman and Nahid Rana - only managed to share three wickets equally. At the same time, Rishad Hossain and Mehidy did most of the damage with their spin-bowling and pulled things back nicely.
Shaheen Shah Afridi and Mohammad Wasim Jnr were on fire with the new ball and destroyed the hosts' top order inside five overs, reducing Bangladesh to 15/3, before lightning and rain halted the game for a long time.
Eventually, Bangladesh were given a revised target of 243 in 32 overs. Litton Das and Towhid Hridoy showed some fight, but the Tigers had no answers to Sadaqat and Haris Rauf's fiery spells, falling apart under pressure.
Pakistan will be forced to make at least one change after Hussain Talat injured his left shoulder while diving to stop a boundary straight after the rain delay in the 2nd ODI, and was stretchered to the hospital with a sling. Pakistan Cricket Board later stated that the nature and extent of the injury would be determined after a complete medical evaluation.
Who will take the series home amidst the rain threat? To find out, join us at 12:45 PM IST and 1:15 PM Local Time on Sunday for its live coverage!
