Often touted as a ‘Head-ache’ for the opposition, Travis Head first burst onto the scene with a sensational century in the 2015-16 BBL season. Over the years, he has evolved as a reliable batsman for Australia post the sandpaper scandal.
The southpaw is a sensational striker of the ball and was tipped to be the next reliable finisher for Australia, like a Michael Hussey post his retirement. Following a breathtaking century in the BBL, he was fast-tracked into the Australian T20 team and was picked for the home T20I series against India.
Ever since his first-class debut in 2011, Head has made headlines with some exquisite batting. He has exceptional bottom-hand power and can hit the ball a long way. Owing to consistent performances in both first-class and List A cricket, the selectors had to take notice of the powerful striker. The century in the BBL was the icing on the cake as he single-handedly won a match for his franchise, Adelaide Strikers, against the Sydney Strikers.
Travis Head BBL Career
Travis Head made his Big Bash League (BBL) debut on January 10, 2013, playing for the Adelaide Strikers. This marked the beginning of his explosive BBL career. The explosive left-hander blasted the club’s first BBL century with an unbeaten 101 against the Sydney Sixers on New Year’s Eve of 2015.
Head marked his first season as skipper by leading the Strikers to their inaugural Big Bash title in BBL|07 to thrust his name back in front of Australian selectors. Head scored a valuable 44* off 29 balls in the final against Hobart Hurricanes.
Travis Head T20I Career
Considering his red-hot form in the BBL|05, Travis Head was rewarded by national selectors with his maiden international call ahead of the Indian series. Head made a sedate start to his career, scoring 2 runs off 5 balls in his first T20I match on January 26, 2016.
He didn’t manage to book a spot for the 2016 T20 World Cup but was on the Australian selection radar. Remained on the fringes, the Adelaide batter could only bag a regular spot in 2022 post Aaron Finch’s retirement.
In May 2024, he was named in Australia's squad for the 2024 ICC Men's T20 World Cup tournament. Head was the third-highest run scorer of the tournament, scoring 255 runs from seven innings with two half-centuries.
Travis Head ODI Career
Head was brought into Australia's ODI setup for the first time for a Tri-Series in the West Indies. He made his ODI debut on 13 June 2016 against the West Indies.
Initially, Head had been given several roles in his career. By then, he had batted quite often in his preferred middle-order slot but had also been asked to open the innings on quite a few occasions. He started off opening the innings in 2017 when Australia were planning to use him as an opener in the Champions Trophy. He smashed a sensational century in his opening debut against Pakistan in Adelaide, and was also involved in a breathtaking stand with David Warner, who also scored a century.
However, since then, the ploy didn’t work out, and Head was asked to bat in his preferred middle order. He continued to establish himself in the limited-overs team, but a dip in form saw him getting dropped ahead of the 2019 World Cup in favour of players like Shaun Marsh and Marcus Stoinis, who came into the tournament on the back of some good form.
Travis Head’s moment to shine came in the 2023 Cricket World Cup. Playing his first World Cup match, he scored his fourth ODI century (109 off 67 balls) against New Zealand and won the player of the match award. On top of that, his all-round performance in the semi-final against South Africa, taking 3 wickets in a close encounter, helped Australia book a place in the final.
Moreover, in the final against India on November 19, 2023, he scored a match-winning 137 off 120 deliveries to help Australia clinch the coveted title, defeating the host nation by 6 wickets. Chasing down the target of 241, Head received the Player of the Match award in the title clash.
With the century, he became the seventh batsman, the third Australian, and the only second chaser to score a century in a Cricket World Cup Final.
Travis Head Test Career
Travis Head was nowhere in the scheme of things as far as Test cricket was concerned, but a sandpaper scandal paved the way for a chance in Test cricket. In 2018, he was selected for the tour of the UAE against Pakistan. However, on 7 October 2018, he started off with a duck in his first innings. The southpaw scored a half-century in the 2nd innings, enabling Australia to save the Test match from a precarious situation.
He kept his spot for the home Test series against India in the absence of David Warner and Steve Smith. He started off with a good half-century in the opening Test at Adelaide. However, he failed to convert his starts in the upcoming matches. Sri Lanka’s tour proved to be the series where Head cemented his place in the middle order.
He returned with scores of 84, 161 (his maiden Test century), and 59 and was selected for the 2019 Ashes tour. To back up with his exceptional batting abilities, Head is also a reliable occasional off-spinner and can chip in with some overs in limited-overs cricket.
Since his debut in the limited overs, Head kept going in and out of the playing 11. However, in the 2022-23 Test series against West Indies, he scored a career-best 175 in the second Test.
Known for his explosive style of batting, Travis Head established himself as a permanent name in the longest format of the game, scoring massive hundreds across the globe.
In December 2024, he scored two centuries in the second and third Tests of the 2024–25 Border–Gavaskar Trophy, with scores of 140 and 152 respectively. He was the leading run scorer for the series, making 448 runs from 9 innings at an average of 56.00.
Moreover, during the 2025-26 Home Ashes series, Head scored 629 runs at an average of 62.90 in 10 innings, which was the most runs scored by any batter in the series. He hit 3 centuries during the series, also the most of any batter.
Notably, in the first Test, Head scored a 69-ball century, the second fastest Ashes century of all time. With the knock, Travis Head gave arch-rivals England a taste of ‘Travball’, an adaptation of Bazball.
