Player Bio

A prodigious right-handed batter renowned for his outstanding timing and sound technique, Shubman Gill is known for his ability to anchor innings across all formats.

A standout from the 2018 U19 World Cup-winning "batch of superstars," Gill quickly transitioned from a young prodigy to a modern-day mainstay in the Indian national team. Often referred to as "The Prince" of Indian cricket, his calm temperament and appetite for big runs have positioned him as a cornerstone of India’s batting future and a burgeoning leader on the world stage.

Shubman Gill Domestic Career

Shubman Gill’s dominance began early in the age-group levels for Punjab, famously scoring 351 runs in a U16 Inter-District match and hitting an unbeaten double-century on his U16 state debut in the 2014 Vijay Merchant Trophy.

He made his List A debut for Punjab in the 2016–17 Vijay Hazare Trophy and followed it with a First-Class debut in the 2017–18 Ranji Trophy.

His prolific domestic form, including a record as the youngest captain in Deodhar Trophy history (leading India C at age 20), paved the way for his senior national call-up. Even as an established international, he remains committed to his roots, recently representing Punjab in the 2025-26 Ranji and Vijay Hazare campaigns.

Shubman Gill ODI Career

Shubman Gill earned his maiden ODI cap for India after massively impressing at the U19 World Cup 2018. Making his debut on January 31, 2019, for India against New Zealand at Seddon Park, Hamilton, in the fourth ODI of the series.

However, over the years, the ODI format has seen Gill reach extraordinary heights, notably becoming the youngest player ever to score a double century (208 vs New Zealand in 2023). He is the fastest male batter to reach 2,000 runs in the history of the format, achieving the feat in just 38 innings.

A vital cog in the 2023 World Cup and 2025 Champions Trophy campaigns, he anchored the chase with a brilliant 101* against Bangladesh in the latter tournament to help India lift the trophy. His remarkable consistency led him to the World No. 1 ranking in the ICC ODI Batting charts by early 2026.

Not only that, at 26, Shubman Gill has been named India’s ODI captain, replacing Rohit Sharma, with the official announcement arriving ahead of the October 2025 series against Australia. Gill has been tasked with leading the team for the 2027 ODI World Cup cycle.

Shubman Gill Test Career

Shubman Gill made his Test debut for India on December 26, 2020, against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) during the Boxing Day Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. He replaced Prithvi Shaw as an opener, scoring 45 and 35* in the two innings, contributing significantly to a successful comeback win for India.

In the last half a decade, Gill’s Test career has been defined by high-pressure resilience, starting with his iconic 91 at the Gabba in 2021 that facilitated India’s historic series win in Australia.

In 2025, Gill reached a new milestone when he was appointed India's Test Captain following the retirements of senior stalwarts.

In his first series as captain, the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against England, he delivered a masterclass, amassing 754 runs with four centuries, including a monumental 269, the highest individual score by an Indian in a Test played outside Asia. This performance made him only the third cricketer, after Don Bradman and Sunil Gavaskar, to score four hundreds in a bilateral series as captain.

Shubman Gill T20I Career

After proving his mettle in the IPL for the Gujarat Titans, Shubman Gill earned his T20I debut for India against Sri Lanka on January 3, 2023, at the Wankhede Stadium. In his debut match, he scored 7 runs off 5 balls.

Gill quickly etched his name in history by scoring a maiden century (126*) against New Zealand, becoming one of the few Indians to hit hundreds in all three formats. Though he was a reserve during India’s triumphant 2024 T20 World Cup campaign, he was immediately appointed captain for the Zimbabwe series in July 2024, leading a young side to a 4-1 victory.

By late 2025, he remained a fixture in the squad, opening the batting in series against South Africa and Australia, maintaining a career strike rate of approximately 138. However, the national selectors chose Sanju Samson over him for India’s squad for the T20 World Cup 2026.

Shubman Gill IPL Career

Shubman Gill’s IPL journey began with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in 2018, where he was acquired for INR 1.8 crore and served as a consistent top-order presence for four seasons.

In 2022, he joined the Gujarat Titans (GT) and helped them win the title in their inaugural season.

His "breakout" 2023 season saw him win the Orange Cap with a staggering 890 runs. Following Hardik Pandya's departure, Gill was named GT captain for the 2024 season. Ahead of the 2025 Mega Auction, the franchise reaffirmed its total faith in his leadership, retaining him for a massive INR 16.50 crore.
