Sediqullah Atal’s Early Life and Background

Sediqullah Atal was born in Logar Province, Afghanistan, a region that has increasingly contributed to the country’s cricketing talent pool. Growing up at a time when cricket was rapidly gaining popularity across Afghanistan, he developed his game through street cricket and local clubs, sharpening his instincts as a natural stroke-maker.

His passion and consistency soon caught the attention of regional coaches, and Atal progressed quickly through youth-level cricket. By his late teens, the left-hander had already built a reputation as a fearless opener capable of setting the tone at the top of the order.

Sediqullah Atal’s Domestic Career

Sediqullah Atal’s professional journey began in September 2020, when he made his T20 debut for Kabul Eagles in the Shpageeza Cricket League. Batting at the top, he showed early signs of the aggressive style that would later define his game.

He continued his rise by making his List A debut in October 2021 for Band-e-Amir Region in the Ghazi Amanullah Khan Regional One Day Tournament, adapting well to the demands of longer white-ball formats. Even before establishing a long List A record, Atal’s talent was evident enough for selectors to consider him for national duty.

Across domestic cricket, he has remained a consistent opening option, valued for his ability to score quickly without sacrificing control.

Sediqullah Atal played a standout role in Afghanistan A’s historic triumph in the 2024 ACC Emerging Teams Asia Cup, guiding them to their maiden championship. His exceptional consistency with the bat earned him the Player of the Tournament award, as he topped the scoring charts with 368 runs in five innings, the highest tally ever recorded in a single edition of the competition.

Sediqullah Atal’s International Career 

Sediqullah Atal made his way into Afghanistan’s international setup after steady performances at domestic and youth levels, beginning his senior international journey in 2023.

Sediqullah Atal’s T20I Career

Sediqullah Atal made his T20I debut against Pakistan on 27 March 2023, featuring in the third and final match of the series. The debut came after earlier series disruptions, highlighting the persistence of selectors' continued backing of him despite external challenges. 

Since then, Atal has remained part of Afghanistan’s white-ball discussions, earning selection as a reserve player for the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. His aggressive approach at the top continues to be seen as a valuable option in Afghanistan’s evolving T20 setup.

In T20 internationals, Sediqullah Atal is viewed as a proactive opener capable of putting opposition attacks under early pressure and will be a key part of the Afghan side in the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2026.

Sediqullah Atal’s ODI Career

Sediqullah Atal’s ODI career gained momentum in December 2024, when he scored his maiden ODI century, a composed yet assertive 104 against Zimbabwe. The innings marked a major breakthrough, proving his ability to convert starts into match-defining scores at the international level.

October 2024 proved to be a defining period in Sediqullah Atal’s career. Representing Afghanistan A in the ACC Emerging Teams Asia Cup, he delivered one of the most dominant batting performances in the tournament’s history.

Atal finished as the Player of the Tournament, scoring 368 runs in five matches at an extraordinary average of 122.66 and a strike rate of 145. His scores of 83, 95, 52, 83, and 55 powered Afghanistan A to their maiden ACC Emerging Teams Asia Cup title, firmly placing him among the most exciting batting prospects in the region. 

His ODI performances, combined with consistency at the A-team level, earned him selection in Afghanistan’s squad for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. One of Sediqullah Atal’s most notable ODI performances came against Australia during the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 on February 28, 2025, at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. 

Batting at number three after the early dismissal of Rahmanullah Gurbaz in the very first over, Atal played a mature and controlled innings, scoring 85 runs off 95 balls. 

This innings remains the second-highest individual score by an Afghan batter against Australia in international cricket, surpassed only by Ibrahim Zadran’s unbeaten 129 in the 2023 ODI World Cup.

Sediqullah Atal’s IPL Career

Sediqullah Atal’s rise to global attention continued when he joined the Delhi Capitals during the IPL 2025 season as a replacement player for Harry Brook. He made his IPL debut on 24 May 2025 in the match against Punjab Kings, stepping onto one of cricket’s biggest stages as a young Afghan opener.

Impressed by his potential and temperament, Delhi Capitals retained Atal for the IPL 2026 season, signalling long-term belief in his ability to succeed at the franchise level. 

Sediqullah Atal’s journey from street cricket in Logar Province to international cricket, IPL exposure, and major tournament success reflects Afghanistan’s expanding cricketing ecosystem.
