Player Bio

A batting all-rounder by profession, Matthew Short, saw a rise in his professional career after getting an opportunity to open for the Adelaide Strikers in the 2021-22 Big Bash League. And he never looked back after that.

Short, a gritty right-handed batter who can chip in with right-arm off-break, made a name for himself at the 2014 Under-19 World Cup. He was the leading run-scorer for Australia in the tournament with 237 runs from 6 games at an average of 39.50. He is a product of the Victorian Academy, and despite boasting a strong performance at the Under-19 World Cup, Short found it difficult getting into the Victorian side.

Short made his first-class debut for Cricket Australia XI against the touring New Zealand side in 2015.

Apart from Cricket Australia XI and Victoria, Short has also played for Melbourne Renegades, and he received his first development rookie contract during the 2013-14 BBL season.

Matthew Short BBL Career

Matthew Short joined Adelaide Strikers ahead of BBL|09, and later became a vital cog of their squad and the captain. Slated as one of the best players in the entire Big Bash League, Short rose through the ranks in BBL|12, when he had a breakout season, winning the BBL Player of the Tournament Award as the leading run-scorer (458 runs in 14 games)

Short followed that up the next season, again making the most runs (541 runs in 11 matches) and going back-to-back in the Player of the Tournament Award.

In BBL|13, Short became the first male player to win three consecutive Strikers MVP awards. However, the dashing batter saw a dip in his run tallies with 236 and 280 runs, respectively, in the following two seasons.

Matthew Short T20I Career

Matthew Short made his T20I debut for Australia against South Africa on 30 August 2023. In his second match, Short scored his maiden half-century in international cricket, scoring 66 off just 30 balls.

This magnificent innings steered Australia to a comfortable victory over South Africa. Gaining the team management’s trust, Short featured in each match of Australia’s 3-0 sweep of South Africa.

In May 2024, he was named a reserve player in Australia’s squad for the 2024 ICC Men's T20 World Cup. Two years later, he was part of the squad for the 2026 T20 World Cup, which was played in India and Sri Lanka.

Matthew Short ODI Career

On 22 September 2023, Matthew Short made his ODI debut against India, but had a sober start to his career.

In September 2024 against England, Short took his maiden five-wicket haul in T20I, taking 5 for 22 and recording the third-best figures for an Australian bowler in T20Is. Meanwhile, in the fifth ODI of the same series, he scored his maiden ODI half-century off just 23 balls.
