Player Bio

Predominantly a limited-over cricketer for Australia, Marcus Stoinis is a destructive middle-order batter and a medium-fast bowler with an imposing physique due to his Greek heritage. Known for his bowling variations in the middle overs, he is also considered a bona fide all-rounder.

After making his first-class debut for Western Australia against Queensland in January 2009, Marcus Stoinis lacked regular opportunities in the domestic circuit due to his inconsistency. Notably, Stoinis decided to spend part of 2012 playing in the English season for the Peterborough Town Cricket Club in the Northampton Premier League, taking a hat-trick in one of the matches.

After a little stint in England, Stoinis was selected in the Perth Scorchers squad before the 2012-13 Big Bash League, replacing an injured Mitchell Marsh. After featuring for Scorchers in the BBL for a few seasons, he made a name for himself as one of the prolific all-rounders in the coveted tournament.

Moreover, Stoinis, famously known as ‘Hulk’, came into the limelight when he was bought by the Delhi Capitals (formerly known as Delhi Daredevils) before the start of the 2015 edition of the Indian Premier League.

Apart from that, the Australian all-rounder has also played for Royal Challengers Bangalore and Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings). His stint with the Punjab-based IPL franchise ranked the highest. Presently, he is part of the Lucknow Super Giants, having been signed ahead of IPL 2025.

Marcus Stoinis has been a key member of Australia's white-ball setup, playing a crucial role in their triumphs at both the 2021 ICC Men's T20 World Cup and the 2023 Cricket World Cup. Known for his powerful hitting and ability to contribute with the ball, he has also been a sought-after player in various T20 leagues worldwide.

Marcus Stoinis T20I Career

Australian all-rounder Marcus Stoinis made his T20I debut against England on August 31, 2015. However, Stoinis failed to make any significant impact, and the Aussies eventually lost by 5 runs.

Nonetheless, in the next 10 years, Stoinis has been an integral part of the Aussie white-ball setup. Playing vital roles in Australia’s 2021 T20 World Cup win, including a match-winning partnership with Matthew Wade in the semi-final against Pakistan.

Stoinis remained a vital cog of the Australian side during the 2022 T20 World Cup and the one after that, despite the side failing to make a mark in those two mega events. Although he played the 2026 T20 World Cup as well, without a national or state contract.

Marcus Stoinis ODI Career (2015-2025)

Making his maiden ODI appearance on September 11, 2015, Marcus Stoinis fell prey to Moeen Ali on just 4 runs and went wicketless in his four overs. However, he soon proved his mettle in only his second game against New Zealand, picking 3 wickets and scoring 146 not out, though in the losing cause. His knock was the highest ODI score from a seventh in the batting order by an Australian batsman.

Showing his prowess in the 50-over format, in March 2017, Marcus Stoinis was added to the Australian Test squad as a replacement for the injured Mitchell Marsh. He was again included in the Test side for the match against Sri Lanka. However, he is yet to play a game in the longest format.

Becoming a regular name in the ODI side, Stoinis featured in Australia’s 2023 Cricket World Cup-winning squad.

Notably, on 6th February, 2025, the hard-hitting all-rounder shocked the world by announcing his immediate ODI retirement. The 35-year-old was included in Australia’s preliminary 15-man side for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. However, sustaining a mild hamstring injury, Stoinis stepped down.

Despite the injury, his decision to retire from ODIs stems from his desire to focus on the T20 format for the remainder of his career, both at the international level and in franchise cricket.

Reflecting on his decision, Stoinis said, “Playing ODI cricket for Australia has been an incredible journey, and I’m grateful for every moment I’ve had in the green and gold. Representing my country at the highest level is something I’ll always cherish. This wasn’t an easy decision, but I believe it’s the right time for me to step away from ODIs and fully focus on the next chapter of my career.”

Marcus Stoinis BBL Career

In December 2012, Stoinis was selected in the Perth Scorchers' squad for the 2012–13 Big Bash League season, replacing an injured Mitchell Marsh.

Initially, used as a middle-order batter, Stoinis was promoted to permanently open the innings for the Melbourne Stars in the 2018 BBL. The decision turned out to be very profitable as he became the leading run-scorer for the Stars in that season. He also picked 14 wickets, thus proving how massively he improved his game.

The Perth-born was caught in a controversy when he directed a homophobic slur against Melbourne Renegades bowler Kane Richardson and was fined 7,500 Australian dollars on January 5, 2020. Two games later, the Melbourne Stars player blasted 147* runs from 77 balls against the Sydney Sixers, setting a new record for the then-highest individual score in BBL history.

Stoinis also holds the record for having scored the most runs in a BBL season. In the 2019-20 edition, he smashed 705 runs (that includes a ton and six half-centuries) for the Stars in 17 games.

In April 2022, he was signed by Southern Brave for The Hundred in England, further expanding his presence in global T20 competitions. The following year, in March 2023, he joined the San Francisco Unicorns for the inaugural season of Major League Cricket (MLC) in the United States.

By December 2024, Stoinis was appointed as the captain of the Melbourne Stars for BBL14, replacing Glenn Maxwell. His leadership role marked a new chapter in his career as he took charge of one of the most prominent teams in Australia's Big Bash League.
