Ibrahim Zadran is one of Afghanistan’s most technically solid and reliable opening batters in modern cricket. A right-handed top-order batsman, he is known for his temperament, shot selection, and ability to anchor innings in both ODI and T20 formats.
Zadran made his international debut as a teenager and has since grown into a key figure in Afghanistan’s batting lineup.
Ibrahim Zadran’s Early Life and Background
Ibrahim Zadran was born on 12 December 2001 in Khost, Afghanistan. Unlike many Afghan cricketers who learned the game in refugee camps, he is a homegrown talent who developed entirely within Afghanistan. He belongs to the Zadran tribe, a well-known Pashtun lineage in southeastern Afghanistan.
Cricket ran in his family. His uncle, Noor Ali Zadran, was a senior Afghanistan international cricketer, and his cousin, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, is regarded as one of the world’s best T20 spinners. Watching his uncle play international cricket, particularly during the 2010 T20 World Cup, inspired him to take the sport seriously from a young age.
Zadran trained at a family-run cricket academy set up by Noor Ali Zadran on a large farm in Khost. He honed his skills by practising extensively on hard pitches with his cousins and closely examining the videos of top cricketers, including Sachin Tendulkar, Kumar Sangakkara, Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma. This early exposure to high-quality coaching and disciplined practice shaped his compact technique and calm batting style.
Ibrahim Zadran’s Domestic Career
Ibrahim Zadran made his List A debut for Mis Ainak Region in the 2017 Ghazi Amanullah Khan Regional One Day Tournament on 11 August 2017. A month later, he made his T20 debut for Mis Ainak Knights in the Shpageeza Cricket League on 12 September 2017, quickly establishing himself as a promising young opener.
In September 2018, he was selected in Nangarhar’s squad for the inaugural Afghanistan Premier League, gaining exposure to franchise cricket at a young age. His performances in domestic competitions reflected maturity beyond his years, especially in longer formats.
In 2021, Zadran played club cricket in England for Boyne Hill in Berkshire, where he scored 479 runs in 15 matches as an opener. This stint helped him gain experience in different playing conditions and refine his technique against swing and seam bowling.
Ibrahim Zadran’s International Career
Ibrahim Zadran made his international debut in 2019 and has since become one of Afghanistan’s most dependable batters across formats. His early exposure in Under-19 cricket, where he topped the run charts for Afghanistan U19 in two World Cups, prepared him for senior international cricket.
Over the years, he has delivered crucial performances in high-pressure matches, including the ODI World Cup and Champions Trophy. His consistency, temperament, and ability to play long innings have made him a mainstay in Afghanistan’s batting lineup.
Ibrahim Zadran’s Test Career
Ibrahim Zadran made his Test debut for Afghanistan on 5 September 2019 against Bangladesh in a one-off match. Though Afghanistan have played only a limited number of Test matches, Zadran has been viewed as a technically sound option for the longest format due to his patience and defensive technique.
Zadran’s approach to batting suggests he has the potential to develop into a reliable red-ball player in the future.
Ibrahim Zadran’s ODI Career
Ibrahim Zadran made his ODI debut on 11 November 2019 against the West Indies. However, his breakthrough came in June 2022 when he scored his maiden ODI century - an unbeaten 120 against Zimbabwe.
In November 2022, he played one of the best ODI series of his career against Sri Lanka, scoring 106, 10, 162, and 98 in four innings. His 162 remains the highest individual ODI score by an Afghan player, and he won Player of the Series with 278 runs at an average of 92.66.
During the 2023 ODI World Cup, Zadran made history by becoming the first Afghan batter to score a World Cup century, hitting 129* against Australia at the Wankhede Stadium. He also slammed a match-winning knock of 87 against Pakistan.
In the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, Zadran set a tournament record by scoring 177 off 146 balls against England, the highest individual score in Champions Trophy history. This innings further cemented his status as Afghanistan’s premier ODI batsman.
Ibrahim Zadran’s T20I Career
Ibrahim Zadran made his T20I debut on 14 November 2019 against the West Indies. He holds the distinction of being the first Afghan batter to score four consecutive fifties in T20Is. His calm approach at the top of the order allows Afghanistan to build stable starts in high-pressure matches.
Zadran represents the new era of Afghan batting, combining technique, temperament, and leadership.
From dominating Under-19 cricket to breaking records in World Cups and Champions Trophy, he has consistently raised his game on the biggest stages. As Afghanistan continues to grow as a cricketing nation, Ibrahim Zadran is set to remain a central figure in their success across all formats.
