Player Bio

Hardik Pandya is an astute epitome of the phrase, “comeback is always stronger than the setback.” A career marred by injuries, an ugly divorce, and on-ground humiliation by fans, you name it. Hardik Pandya’s life is rife with stumbling blocks.

In India, Kapil Dev set a standard for the highest quality an all-rounder could achieve. Several candidates came and went, all of them carrying the tag or burden of following in the former Indian skipper’s footsteps.

After a long wait, for the first time, an all-rounder broke the ice and created an identity of his own. It is none other than Hardik Pandya, the pace-bowling, big-hitting all-rounder, who has been winning matches with his talent and self-belief.

Both on and off the field, Hardik Pandya excites you. Tattoos, a fancy hairstyle, and some exotic costumes would all make people think Pandya is living the best possible life. However, it wasn’t always so rosy.

Hardik Pandya’s Biography and Early Career

Born on 11 October 1993, Hardik Pandya’s early life has been full of hardships. Pandya’s family had a humble background, relocating from Surat to Vadodara so that Hardik and his brother Krunal Pandya, who is also an international cricketer, could join the Kiran More Academy.

Interestingly, in his early days, Hardik was actually a leg-spinner. But at 18, Baroda coach Sanath Kumar told him to switch to fast bowling, a decision that changed his entire career. Even though he was dropped from age-group teams due to “attitude issues,” Hardik later clarified he was just expressive and emotional, not arrogant.

Once considered “a kid with attitude problems” at the age-level cricket, Pandya became one of the most animated and confident cricketers of all time.

Hardik Pandya’s Domestic Career

After some good performances in club and age-group cricket, Hardik Pandya finally got the chance to represent Baroda in the 2012–13 season. He quickly made an impression, especially in the 2013–14 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

The talented all-rounder had to keep producing good performances, and that is exactly in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy by scoring 377 runs in ten matches. He also took 10 wickets and helped Baroda end the tournament as the runners-up.

His exploits in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy got him picked by the Mumbai Indians ahead of the Indian Premier League 2015, thanks to John Wright, who scouted the all-rounder in 2014.

Once things turned around for Pandya, as he began to play for India, the all-rounder faded from the domestic circuit. However, in line with the BCCI's guidelines on domestic participation by contracted players, Hardik Pandya returned to Baroda for the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025-26.

Star India all-rounder Hardik Pandya unleashed carnage in the 50-over domestic tournament. Playing for Baroda against Chandigarh, Pandya clobbered nine sixes and two boundaries, smashing a scintillating 75 off just 31 balls. His strike-rate read an astonishing 241.94. This knock came just five days after Pandya slammed a stunning 68-ball century in his first VHT 2025-26 match, against Vidarbha.

Hardik Pandya’s IPL Career

Hardik Pandya’s solid performances in Baroda’s title-winning campaign in 2013-14 caught the attention of the Mumbai Indians’ scouting network, led by former Team India coach John Wright, with the IPL franchise eventually signing the pace-bowling all-rounder ahead of the 2015 IPL season.

In his first IPL season, Hardik didn’t set the tournament alight, but he still came up with two eye-catching performances. After bagging the ‘Man of the Match’ award for a superb cameo against CSK, Hardik scored his first IPL fifty against KKR in a crucial match and was awarded the MOM award once again.

For seven years from 2015 to 2021, Hardik remained a core MI player, winning titles in 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020, before the franchise decided to let him go ahead of the IPL 2022 Mega auction. He was picked by the Gujarat Titans in 2022 and named captain. He started off with a bang, leading them to a title win in their very first season and into the final the following year.

Following two successful seasons with GT, Hardik moved back to MI and was appointed captain. However, his return was marked by extreme reluctance from the fans.

The MI all-rounder faced booing from the crowds during the team’s games in Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, and even on the home ground, Mumbai.

Traded from his earlier side, Pandya replaced India’s all-format captain and MI’s most successful leader, Rohit Sharma. For the fans and experts alike, the move came as a surprise.

After sustaining a ligament issue from twisting his ankle while bowling in the 2023 ODI World Cup against Bangladesh, he returned to action in IPL 2024 but had a below-average season. He picked up 11 wickets and scored only 216 runs.

Amid the ongoing slump in form, Pandya and his ex-wife, Serbian actress-model Natasa Stankovic, announced in July 2024 that they had mutually decided to divorce after four years together. The couple shared a joint statement announcing they are parting ways amicably for their best interests, emphasising co-parenting their son, Agastya, and requesting privacy, though speculation points to lifestyle clashes and differing personalities as underlying factors.

Things might have gone completely wrong for Hardik Pandya and MI. Still, the franchise entrusted him with the leadership for the coming season. And in IPL 2025, Captain Pandya showed his true prowess as skipper, leading the Mumbai Indians to a six-game streak and securing a playoff berth after losing four of five outings. Eventually, they lost in Qualifier 2 to the eventual runners-up, Punjab Kings.

Hardik Pandya’s T20I Career

Soon after impressing in the cash-rich tournament, a national team call-up came Hardik Pandya’s way as the selectors named him for the T20I series in Australia in 2016. A 22-year-old at that point, he overcame a nervy start to pick two wickets in the first T20I at Adelaide, making his debut on January 26, 2016.

Hardik’s first opportunity to impress with the bat in international cricket came in the home series against Sri Lanka, and he delivered with an impressive 12-ball 27 at Ranchi. He went on to impress with the ball during the Asia Cup, and the selectors picked him for the 2016 World Cup in India too. Displaying nerves of steel, Hardik, in a must-win group game against Bangladesh, defended two runs off the last three deliveries.

Years later, in 2024, Pandya was a crucial player in India's T20 World Cup victory, serving as vice-captain and delivering match-winning performances, notably with a three-wicket spell and bowling the final over against South Africa, defending 16 runs to seal the trophy.

Hardik Pandya’s ODI Career

After impressing in the shortest format of the game, Hardik got the opportunity to play for the national ODI squad in the home series against New Zealand in 2016. Making Pandya play the longer formats was a masterstroke by the Indian selectors, as the exposure helped in developing swing and longevity as a bowler.

By 2019, the all-rounder became the much-needed pace all-rounder in India’s squad ahead of the ODI World Cup. Bowling at a pace around 140kph with an ability to shift line and length according to the batter and match conditions, the lanky all-rounder is often compared to the first Indian World-Cup winning captain, Kapil Dev.

He remained consistent in both the ODI and T20 formats and also came close to glory with the Indian team at the Champions Trophy 2017 in England. Although India fell at the final hurdle against Pakistan, Hardik did put up a valiant 76-run knock.

However, all this while, problems mounted, as the BCCI suspended both Hardik and KL Rahul for their misogynistic remarks during a TV show. The suspension was lifted thereafter, and the hard-hitting all-rounder made his comeback during the ODI series in New Zealand 2020.

Hardik Pandya’s Test Career

It was just a matter of time before a Test cap was awarded to Pandya after his white-ball exploits, and it did arrive during the away tour of Sri Lanka in July 2017.

After scoring a quick-fire 50 in his debut innings on July 26, 2017, Hardik brought up his first Test hundred at the Pallekele International Stadium.

In his very next Test match, he impressed with a counter-attacking 93 off 95 balls against South Africa at the Newlands Stadium after coming into bat when India was in a spot of bother. His only other impressive performance in Test cricket came during the Trent Bridge Test match, where he picked up a maiden five-wicket haul and also scored a fifty in the same game.

However, a relatively quiet 2018 was worsened by a back injury sustained against Pakistan in the 2018 Asia Cup, forcing the all-rounder to miss the T20I series in Australia. Even though Hardik was added for the final two Tests against Australia, he wasn’t picked in the line-up.

Thus, cutting Hardik Pandya’s Test career short, ending in 2019. Though brief, playing only 11 games between 2016 and 2019, he scored 532 runs with a century and four fifties, and took 17 wickets, including a 5-for, averaging around 31 with both bat and ball, showing his value and promise.
