Player Bio

The son of former Test quick Craig McDermott, Ben McDermott, is a hard-hitting batter who can also keep gloves. Born in Queensland, McDermott has made international appearances for Australia and has experience in the Big Bash League (BBL), having played for Brisbane Heat, Melbourne Renegades and Hobart Hurricanes.

The Hobart-based cricketer made his BBL debut in the 2013-14 season for Brisbane Heat, scoring 30 in his first match against Adelaide Strikers and signed a rookie contract at the start of that season in 2015, but didn't make his debut for the Bulls until the following summer.

McDermott struggled in domestic cricket in his early days but soon grabbed headlines in the sixth edition of the BBL with some masterclass hitting. The right-hander blasted nine sixes on his way to a match-winning 114 off 52 balls.

In October 2018, Ben McDermott received his maiden call-up to Australia’s T20I squad for the series against Pakistan. He went on to make his T20I debut in the one-off match against the United Arab Emirates on 22 October 2018, marking his first appearance for Australia at the senior international level. The following month, in November 2018, McDermott was included in Australia’s ODI squad for the home series against South Africa, but did not feature in any matches.

After a period affected by the global COVID-19 disruption, McDermott remained firmly on the national radar. On 16 July 2020, he was named in a 26-man preliminary Australian squad assembled to begin training ahead of a potential tour of England, reflecting his continued standing among Australia’s white-ball options during that period.

In June 2021, Ben McDermott earned selection in Australia’s ODI squad for tours of the West Indies and Bangladesh, marking the next step in his international progression. He went on to make his ODI debut on 20 July 2021 against the West Indies, adding another format to his Australia resume.

Later that year, McDermott etched his name into Big Bash League history. During the December 2021 BBL season, he became the first player to score back-to-back centuries in the competition and also the first to register three BBL hundreds overall, underlining his standing as one of the tournament’s most destructive top-order batters.

McDermott’s international breakthrough in the 50-over format came in March 2022, when he scored his maiden ODI century. His 104 against Pakistan in the second match of the series showcased his ability to convert starts at the highest level, even though Australia finished on the losing side.

Away from Australian cricket, McDermott signed with Hampshire Hawks in February 2022 to feature in the 2022 Vitality Blast, further expanding his experience in overseas T20 leagues. In May 2023, he returned to Queensland ahead of the 2023–24 Sheffield Shield season. Although he initially committed to a third season with Queensland, he was later granted a release from his contract for personal reasons. He planned to move back to Tasmania with his family, intending the continue his domestic career there despite not having a contract at the time.

McDermott’s adaptability across roles has continued to draw attention, and his versatility as a batter remains noted within the national setup, even though his most recent international appearance came in a short-handed Australian T20 side against India following the 2023 ODI World Cup. Heading into the 2025–26 summer, he continues as a key figure for the Hobart Hurricanes in the Big Bash League.
