Player Bio

Unfortunately, the career of Sean Abbott couldn’t quite reach the level that was expected of him when he burst onto the scene as a youngster. Despite his abilities to bowl fast and trouble opposition batters with his pace and swing, Abbott will be remembered as the bowler whose well-directed bouncer was responsible for the death of Philip Hughes.

With Hughes batting on 63, Abbott bowled a good bouncer and Hughes attempted a pull, which missed his bat and struck him on the neck. Abbott couldn’t quite do justice to his potential in the next few years, and he took time to recover from that traumatic situation.

Abbott is one of the most talented fast bowlers in the Australian domestic circuit and can play the big shots. He is a wicket-taking bowler who made his ODI and T20I debut against Pakistan in 2014. However, after missing a lot of chances, he made a return to international cricket in 2019 after a brilliant season for the Sydney Sixers in the Big Bash League. He established himself as one of the finest death bowlers in the tournament and got his place back in the Australian set-up.

Having made his debut for New South Wales at the age of 18, Abbott was superb with the ball, bagging 16 wickets in the Ryobi Cup. He kept taking wickets consistently in Shield cricket and was awarded the Steve Waugh Medal as the best New South Wales player of the season. It was on the back of some impressive returns that Abbott got his maiden opportunity for Australia in the limited-overs series against Pakistan.

After a five-year sabbatical from international cricket, Abbott finally managed to break into the side for the ODI series against England in 2020 but didn’t manage to play a single game. Yet again, he had a great season with the ball in the Sheffield Shield and was awarded a spot in the Australian limited-overs and Test side for the 2020-21 home series against India.

In April 2021, Abbott signed with Surrey County Cricket Club to compete in the County Championship and T20 Blast. Known for his ability to generate a sharp pace and contribute valuable lower-order runs, Abbott’s arrival was seen as a boost to Surrey’s squad.

His debut came on May 27, 2021, against Gloucestershire at The Oval. In this match, Abbott showcased his all-around capabilities by scoring 40 runs and taking 2 wickets, contributing to Surrey's innings victory. Unfortunately, during the same match, he sustained a hamstring injury that prevented him from taking the field on the final day. This injury curtailed his stint with Surrey, forcing him to miss the remainder of the County Championship season and the T20 Blast. Consequently, he returned to Australia for rehabilitation.

In the 2022 Indian Premier League (IPL), Abbott joined Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) with high expectations, given his notable performances in international cricket and the Big Bash League. However, his involvement was limited to a single appearance during the season. Debuting for SRH on May 5, 2022, against Delhi Capitals at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai. In this match, he bowled four overs, conceding 47 runs at an economy rate of 11.75, and secured one wicket.

In June 2022, the Australian all-rounder sustained a fractured left index finger during a net session while batting in Colombo. This injury occurred as the Australian team was preparing for the first T20I against Sri Lanka. The injury not only ruled him out of the T20I series but also prevented his participation in the Australia A squad's subsequent four-day matches, and he was not included in the ODI squad as well.

In May 2023, Abbott delivered an extraordinary performance for Surrey in the T20 Blast, etching his name into cricketing history. Facing Kent Spitfires at The Oval, Abbott walked in with Surrey precariously placed at 64 for 4 in the ninth over. What followed was a breathtaking display of power-hitting as Abbott unleashed an unbeaten 110 off just 41 balls, propelling Surrey's total to 235/5.

His century was one to remember as Abbott equalled the record for the fastest T20 hundred in England—a feat first achieved by the late Andrew Symonds for Kent in 2004. This remarkable achievement also placed Abbott's innings among the fastest centuries in T20 cricket globally, just four balls shy of Chris Gayle's all-time record.

On 23 September, during an ODI against India in Indore, Abbott showcased his batting prowess by scoring his maiden international half-century – a brisk 54 off 36 balls, in a match where Australia faced a 99-run defeat. His performance was a silver lining, highlighting his potential as a lower-order batter. Later, after his stunning performance, he was added to the ODI World Cup Squad happening in India.

On 11 November 2023, Abbott made his ODI World Cup debut against Bangladesh. In that match, he delivered a commendable bowling performance, recording figures of 2 for 61, helping Australia towards an easy victory in their final group match. He could only play a single game in the tournament, but he was a part of the squad that dismantled a formidable India in the final.

In late 2024, Australian all-rounder Sean Abbott committed to a third tenure with Surrey County Cricket Club, reflecting his profound impact during the previous stints. His 2023 season with Surrey was particularly remarkable. He amassed 37 wickets in red-ball cricket at an impressive average of under 25 and contributed over 450 runs.

Abbott was drafted by the Quetta Gladiators for the 2025 Pakistan Super League (PSL)- his maiden contract in the league. Abbott joined a squad featuring prominent players such as Shoaib Malik, Mohammad Amir, and Rilee Rossouw.
