Player Bio

Mitchell van Buuren has long been seen as one of South Africa’s most versatile cricketers, a player capable of making an impact across formats with both bat and ball. Born on January 21, 1998, in Johannesburg, he developed through the Lions’ youth system and was earmarked as a standout prospect from an early age. By the time he turned 19, van Buuren had already broken into the professional circuit, making his first-class debut for Northerns in November 2017 while studying at TUKS. His List A and T20 debuts followed within months, setting the stage for a busy domestic career.

A fluent top-order batter with an attacking streak, van Buuren made headlines in February 2019 when he hammered a stunning 200 off 159 balls for the Lions against Western Province—a knock that underlined his ability to dominate bowling attacks. He soon became a regular across formats for Gauteng and the Lions, finishing as the leading run-scorer in the 2018–19 CSA Provincial One-Day Challenge with 371 runs in just five matches.

His consistency earned him a place in the South Africa Emerging squad in 2023, where he continued to showcase his potential. By then, his aggressive batting style had already attracted franchise attention. The Paarl Royals snapped him up in the inaugural SA20 draft, and he has since provided valuable runs in one of the world’s most competitive T20 leagues.

Beyond South Africa, van Buuren has broadened his experience with stints in English club cricket. In 2022, he featured for Burnopfield CC before returning in 2025 for Ashmanhaugh & Barton Wanderers CC in the ECB East Anglian Premier League, where he produced a standout season—scoring over 1,300 runs and taking 32 wickets across formats.

Equally comfortable as a part-time wicketkeeper and occasional off/leg spinner, van Buuren brings a rare blend of versatility to any side. With his proven domestic record, franchise experience, and overseas success, he remains a name to watch as he looks to push his way further into South Africa’s cricketing setup.
