Flight. Reps. Dip. Turn. These aren’t just terms, these are words that speak volumes about Tom O'Connell. A young leg-break bowler, who was the youngest leg spinner to play domestic one day cricket in Australia ever.
Born in New Brighton, O'Connell is a product of the Monash Tigers club who came in as a young prodigy, before joining Victoria State as a rookie player in 2018, when he was still in High School.
Once school commitments finished, he made the move to Victoria full time and went on to make his debut in the One Day Cup against Western Australia, later that year. The youngster was then signed by Melbourne Stars as a replacement, in BBL|08.
On debut, the leg-spinner shone the brightest as his best performance came against Hobart Hurricanes by finishing with figures of 1-17, including the big wicket of Matthew Wade. He played a couple more games that year, before missing BBL|09.
O'Connell returned for the 2020-21 Big Bash League as a permanent contracted player, where he played just a single game. The youngster is still too young but has shown all the ingredients to represent Australia, across all formats.
