Player Bio

Born under the vibrant skies of Chattogram, Bangladesh, on May 4, 1999, Mahidul Islam Ankon has emerged as a shining talent in the country’s cricketing constellation. A right-handed wicketkeeper-batter with a knack for occasional off-spin bowling, Ankon’s journey from the bustling streets of his hometown to the international stage is a tale of grit, skill, and unyielding determination. At just 25 years old as of April 9, 2025, he stands on the cusp of greatness, blending youthful promise with a maturity that belies his age.

Ankon’s love affair with cricket began early, propelling him into Bangladesh’s squad for the 2018 Under-19 Cricket World Cup—a formative experience that ignited his hunger for the sport. His senior career kicked off with a List A debut for Khelaghar Samaj Kallyan Samity on February 5, 2018, in the Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League.

Just weeks later, on February 24, he announced his arrival with a breathtaking maiden century against Agrani Bank Cricket Club, showcasing his ability to anchor innings with flair. That same year, on October 1, he stepped into first-class cricket with Chattogram Division in the National Cricket League, proving his mettle in the longer format. His T20 debut followed on January 12, 2019, for the Khulna Titans in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), where he has since dazzled for teams like Cumilla Warriors, Khulna Tigers, and Fortune Barishal.

The 2018–19 season saw Ankon dominate as the leading run-scorer for Khelaghar Samaj Kallyan Samity, piling up 420 runs in 11 List A matches—a testament to his consistency and hunger for runs. His talent didn’t go unnoticed, earning him spots in Bangladesh’s 2019 ACC Emerging Teams Asia Cup squad and the gold-medal-winning team at the 2019 South Asian Games, where they triumphed over Sri Lanka in the final.

In February 2021, he further honed his skills with the Bangladesh Emerging team against the Ireland Wolves, steadily building a case for higher honours.

The pinnacle of Ankon’s journey came on October 29, 2024, when he donned the Test cap for Bangladesh against South Africa at his home ground, the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram. Replacing the concussed Jaker Ali, he faced a formidable bowling attack and scored a composed 29 runs off 64 balls—a debut that spoke of his technical soundness and resolve. Reflecting on his growth,

Ankon remarked in an April 4, 2025, interview, “I’m better prepared now for the challenges of international cricket,” a statement that resonates with his steady rise.

With a playing style marked by sharp wicketkeeping, a compact batting technique, and the ability to shift gears when needed, Ankon is a versatile asset. His occasional off-spin adds depth, while his experience across formats—first-class, List A, and T20 equips him to thrive in any situation.

As he continues to represent Chattogram Division, Dhaka Division, and various BPL franchises, alongside stints with Bangladesh A and Emerging teams, Ankon remains a beacon of potential. In a cricketing nation brimming with talent, his calm demeanour and dedication set him apart, promising a future where he could become a mainstay in Bangladesh’s lineup, etching his name into the annals of the game.
