Player Bio

An ever-reliable wicket-keeper and a dashing left-handed batsman, John Simpson has been the first-choice wicketkeeper for over a decade competing against two top-flight wicket-keepers, Ben Scott and David Nash for a place in the playing XI of Middlesex.

Simpson started his cricketing career at just 10 years of age playing for Lancashire in age-group cricket and earned his maiden England U19s callup in 2005 against Bangladesh. Moving to Middlesex in 2008, he realised his future for the side and made his first-class debut in September 2009 against Northants. His breakthrough season came in 2011 when he amassed 869 runs and 65 dismissals behind the wicket in a Championship season and proved his worth to the County giants.

The following proved to be a disaster for the youngster as he was a flop with the bat averaging just 18 in the 2012 Championship season and bounced back scoring two Championship hundreds in 2014 and was also impressive with the big gloves.

With almost 7,000 First-Class runs to his name now. He enjoyed a successful 2019 season, notching up two centuries with an average of 42.65, including an unbeaten knock of 167 against his home county Lancashire. His splendid form in the T20 blast over the years earned him a contract from the Welsh Fire franchise in the upcoming Hundred tournament.
