India did not have the best start to their chase in the 3rd ODI against New Zealand in Indore. While chasing a massive target of 338, India lost their top order very cheaply. This hurt them even more because the series is poised at 1-1, and the winner of this encounter would take the win.

The Indian batters needed a big partnership at the top of the order to take the pressure off the middle order. However, Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer, and KL Rahul all failed to deliver in this match. Virat Kohli was the only player out of the top five who made an impact.

Rohit, Gill, Shreyas, and KL fail to make an impact

Former Indian skipper Rohit was the first to depart in the fourth over. He had been dropped earlier but could not make much of the second chance that he got. After a successful series in Australia and against South Africa, he failed to deliver in all three games against the Kiwis.

After Rohit, skipper Shubman Gill was undone by an excellent delivery by Kyle Jamieson. He bowled a slightly full ball outside the off stump that nipped back in and slipped past Gill’s defence to take the stumps. The skipper needed a good performance in this match and got off to a decent start, scoring 23 runs in 18 balls, but could not continue further.

Even Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul could not do much in the innings, as they gave away their wickets cheaply after scoring 3 and 1 runs, respectively. At this point, India were left trailing at 71/4 in under 13 overs, with only Virat Kohli looking in good touch.

The fans were upset after the Indian top order failed to deliver in the all-important clash, where the series was on the line. Some fans even called for Ruturaj Gaikwad and Sanju Samson's return to the side.

Let’s have a look at how fans reacted to India’s top order failing

Daryl Mitchell and Glenn Phillips took the IND vs NZ 3rd ODI by storm

Earlier in the game, the Black Caps also faced an early collapse. Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana dismissed their top three batters for 58 runs. But after that, it was Daryl Mitchell and Glenn Phillips who saved New Zealand’s sinking boat with their impressive partnership.

The two stars never looked in a hurry despite losing the early wickets. They kept the runs flowing and added 219 runs in their fourth-wicket partnership, with each completing their century.

Mitchell continued his sublime form with his second consecutive century, knocking 137 runs in 131 balls in this innings. Phillips, on the other hand, scored 106 runs at a slightly quicker rate, facing 88 balls in his innings. Thanks to their efforts, New Zealand ended in a very comfortable position in the series decider.
