In the latest development, Sri Lankan cricket has suffered a massive injury jolt as their star player, Pathum Nissanka, has reportedly been ruled out of the upcoming two-match Test series against Pakistan. The opening batter sustained a hamstring injury during the recently concluded tour of England.
Nissanka has yet to fully recover from the hamstring injury; thus, the batter was ruled out of the crucial Pakistan tour, which will be a part of the WTC cycle.
Nissanka's replacement named for Pakistan Test series
The Sri Lankan Cricket Selection Committee has already named a replacement, with Lahiru Udara roped in to replace the injured player for the Pakistan Test series.
Udara recently featured against India in the two-match home Test series, and the player has big shoes to fill as he comes in as a replacement player.
Udara is already in Pakistan as a member of Sri Lanka’s ODI squad and will join the Test squad ahead of the series.
Interestingly, Udara was dropped from the original Test squad vs Pakistan, but an injury to Nissanka opened the door for his comeback.
Why Sri Lanka will miss Nissanka in upcoming Test series
The Sri Lankan side will certainly miss the services of the injured Nissanka for the upcoming Test series against Pakistan. The right-handed batter has played in 19 Tests so far, and has accumulated 1,310 runs, with an average of 42.25.
He provides solidity at the top, and that calm and composed figure will be missed by the visitors as they aim to beat Pakistan.
Nissanka has a solid track record in Asian conditions, and his ability to absorb pressure at the top would have been handy for the Lankan Lions.
Chance for Udara to cement his place in Test side
An injury to Nissanka has helped Udara get his place back in the Test team, and the batter will aim to cement his place in the red-ball side.
The right-handed batter has featured in just 5 Tests and has scored 313 runs, with an average of 34.77. Hence, the upcoming two matches will be crucial for the batter, as a strong showing could help him retain his place in the team.
