In a massive setback for the Gujarat Titans, Shubman Gill has been penalised by the Board of Control for Cricket in India following the DC vs GT match on Wednesday, April 9. The match No. 14 was played at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi.

However, Gujarat Titans opened their account on the points table, although it came the hard way. Notably, they held their nerve until the final ball to edge out the Delhi Capitals by one run.

Gujarat Titans showcase a strong batting performance

Notably, Gujarat Titans batted first and posted a solid total of 210/4. Gill led from the front with an impressive 70 runs. In addition, Washington Sundar scored 55, while Jos Buttler added 52.

Furthermore, the bowling unit also delivered a strong performance. Rashid Khan stood out with three wickets for 17 runs. Along with him, Prasidh Krishna contributed with two wickets, which helped restrict the opposition.

In response, Delhi Capitals fought hard while chasing 211. KL Rahul played a brilliant innings of 92 runs. Meanwhile, David Miller remained unbeaten on 41 and kept the hopes alive.

The match turned extremely close in the final moments. Delhi Capitals needed two runs from the last two deliveries. However, Miller chose not to take a single on the fifth ball. On the final ball, he missed while attempting a shot, and Kuldeep Yadav was run out. As a result, Delhi Capitals ended at 209/8, falling short by just one run.

Shubman Gill fined by BCCI

However, despite the win, Gujarat Titans were found to have violated Article 2.22 of the IPL Code of Conduct. Therefore, Shubman Gill faced a financial penalty since this was the team’s first offence this season. The IPL confirmed that Gujarat Titans failed to complete their overs within the required time, leading to a Level 1 offence.

Moreover, as per the IPL release on April 9, they wrote,

“Gujarat Titans (GT) Captain Shubman Gill has been fined after his team maintained a slow over-rate during Match No. 14 of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 against Delhi Capitals (DC) at Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi.

As this was his team’s first offence of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, which pertains to minimum over-rate offences, Gill was fined INR 12 lakhs.”

Shubman Gill records first offence in IPL 2026

It is important to note that this is Shubman Gill’s first offence in IPL 2026. As a result, he has joined Shreyas Iyer among captains penalised for slow over-rate offences this season. In addition, from IPL now focuses on fines, demerit points, and in-game penalties instead of suspensions.

Meanwhile, with this win, Gujarat Titans moved to sixth place on the points table with two points from three matches and a net run rate of -0.270. In comparison, Delhi Capitals are placed fourth with four points from three games and a net run rate of +0.811.
