Sanju Samson is eyeing the player of the tournament award and there are doubts about it. The right-handed batter is on song and found form at the right time. The 31-year-old set the tone for India in all-important T20 World Cup final against New Zealand with another fifty.

The two teams locked horns against each other at the Narendra Modi Stadium, where Sanju Samson brought up a 33-ball fifty. For the unversed, it was Samson's third-straight fifty in the tournament. 

Sanju Samson Shatters Virat Kohli's World Cup Record

With the breathtaking knock, Samson broke a plethora of records but the one that stood out from the rest is Chetta going past Virat Kohli's 12-year-old record. Sanju took his run-tally to 320, breaking Virat Kohli's 319-run record scripted in 2014 T20 World Cup.

Virat held the record for good 12 years, but now Samson has the most runs by an Indian in a single edition of T20 World Cup.  It has been a brilliant tournament for Samson as he has scored 321 runs in just five innings.

Not just that, but Samson also dethroned and went past Kohli for most runs in World Cup history in knock-outs. The former India captain held the record with 149 runs, but Samson has now 150+ runs.

Sanju Samson only behind Sahibzada Farhan

Sanju Samson is now only behind Sahibzada Farhan, who was the first player to break Virat Kohli's 319-run record. Here is the overall list of players with most runs in a single edition of T20 World Cup.

Eventually, Sanju Samson failed to reach a century and returned to the pavilion after scoring 89 (46). 

Sanju Samson joins elite list with three-fifty plus scores

Notably, Samson has become the seventh player and third Indian after Virat Kohli and KL Rahul to score three-consecutive fifties in T20 World Cup. Here is the complete list.

Talking about the ongoing match, New Zealand have made a good comeback after Samson's heroics. At the time of writing this article, India are 220/4 after 18 overs.
