Mumbai Indians' struggles in IPL 2026 continue as they have suffered their fourth consecutive defeat, this time against Punjab Kings at the Wankhede Stadium on April 16, 2026. While the season had started on a positive note for MI, the team has since lost momentum and now finds itself in a difficult position.
With things not going in the Mumbai Indians’ favour, visible frustration was seen among senior players like Jasprit Bumrah, Rohit Sharma and captain Hardik Pandya.
Mumbai Indians falter in IPL 2026
In the match against Punjab Kings, Mumbai posted a strong total of 195/6, largely due to de Quinton de Kock’s unbeaten 112 and a solid partnership with Naman Dhir.
However, the bowlers could not defend the score as Punjab Kings chased it down in just 16.3 overs, making it clear that Mumbai's bowling attack is currently lacking the bite.
Mumbai Indians, one of the most successful franchises in IPL history, have looked out of sync this season. The biggest concern has been the form of Jasprit Bumrah. Known for his match-winning abilities, Bumrah has not been able to pick up a wicket after five matches in IPL 2026 so far.

Jasprit Bumrah, Rohit Sharma reaction on Hardik Pandya's captaincy
It is important to note that MI's defeat against the Punjab Kings has also brought attention to possible tension within the team. During the match, captain Hardik Pandya was seen actively making field changes and giving constant instructions.
At one point, Jasprit Bumrah appeared unconvinced by a field placement decision. Though Bumrah eventually followed the instruction, his initial reaction suggested disagreement.
Cameras also captured Rohit Sharma in the dugout, visibly frustrated and holding his head in disappointment.
The fact cannot be denied that Hardik Pandya was himself looking under pressure during the MI vs PBKS clash. His body language was sharp, reacting to fielding lapses and repeatedly trying to adjust tactics, but nothing seemed to work in MI’s favour.

MI's struggles in IPL 2026
Mumbai Indians started their IPL 2026 journey with a win against KKR by 6 wickets at Wankhede Stadium. The Hardik Pandya-led team currently have just two points from the five matches they have played so far in the ongoing tournament.
Their Net Run Rate (NRR) stands at -1.076, and they are placed ninth in the IPL 2026 points table. As the tournament progresses, the situation is becoming increasingly difficult for Mumbai. Every upcoming match now carries added importance for the team.
The Mumbai-based franchise will play its next game against the Gujarat Titans on April 20 and will want to turn things around for them to still be in contention for the playoffs.
However, they will need quick improvements in both performance and team coordination to keep their IPL 2026 hopes alive.
