In a significant development, New Zealand have dealt a heavy blow as their star all-rounder Michael Bracewell has been ruled out of the remainder of T20 World Cup 2026 with injury. Notably, the 34-year-old has failed to recover in time from his calf injury and has returned to New Zealand to complete recovery.
For the unversed, Bracewell suffered a calf tear during 3rd ODI between India and New Zealand, following which he was ruled out of the T20I series as well. The 34-year-old was well on track to get fit in time for the T20 World Cup 2026, but injured his muscle again during warmup on Sunday.
Bracewell was sent for scans, which confirmed that the all-rounder require three more weeks to get fit and return to cricketing action.
New Zealand name Cole McConchie as replacement
The blackcaps have also named a replacement for Michael Bracewell. Notably, Cole McConchie will travel to India as a travelling reserve alongside Ben Sears. Notably, Cole is an off-spinner, but it has been two-years since he last played for the Kiwis.
Notably, Cole captains Canterbury Kings and has featured in 6 ODIs and 12 T20Is for New Zealand. He made his debut against Bangladesh and last played against Pakistan in April 2024.
Why did New Zealand pick Cole McConchie as Bracewell's replacement?
Notably, the 34-year-old has recently done well in the Ford Trophy 2025-26, where he scored 125 runs with the bat and picked up six wickets in seven innings.
However, the Super Smash 2025-26 tournament was much better for him as a bowler as he picked up 14 wickets in 11 innings, which caught the selectors' attention and earned McConchie as comeback to the national team.
The off-spinner will join the team on February 13. New Zealand have currently played two matches and have won all of their matches. The Kiwis will next play on February 14 against South Africa and it is to be seen whether Cole will feature in the playing XI.
New Zealand coach gutted with Bracewell's absence
“We’re all feeling for Michael. It’s really tough to get ruled out of a World Cup and I know how much playing for New Zealand means to him. Michael worked incredibly hard to give himself a chance but unfortunately has had this set back. We wish him a smooth recovery," remarked Walter on Bracewell's absence.
Walter also commented on Cole's selection and stated that he is a seasoned campaigner.
“He brings a great all-round skillset to the group along with a lot of T20 experience. It’s great to be able to lean on an experienced head especially for a World Cup,” he added.
So far, New Zealand have done well without Bracewell and it seems unlikely that Cole will get a place in the playing XI for the Blackcaps.
