Preview by Mohammad Anab

Heartbroken and winless Afghanistan still have a mathematical chance to qualify for the Super 8s but a lot of results of other Group D games have to go in their favour. Such things are not in their hands but things registering their first win of the T20 World Cup 2026 by defeating a decent UAE side in Delhi on Monday morning are still in their hands.

After losing to New Zealand by five wickets, Afghanistan played the closest of all close games against South Africa last week. The match went into a Super Over twice and both sides were a ball away from a victory. However, it was the Proteas that managed to register a victory in that nail-biting thriller.

Afghanistan can draw some positives from that game. Opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz's excellent batting in the second innings as well in the second Super Over. Also, all-rounder Azmatullah Omarzai's fine display with both bat and ball.

The good part is that none of the Afghan players has suffered an injury yet. However, their performance analyst was hospitalised a couple of days ago after he experienced some pain in the chest.

The side is likely to go with the same playing XI as its players have had enough rest during this five-day break after the Proteas game.

Muhammad Waseem-led UAE
are a much more confident unit as the side arrives in this fixture after registering a win over Canada. After restricting Canada to 150/7, thanks to a fabulous five-wicket haul spell by pacer Junaid Siddique, UAE chased down the target in the final over with five wickets in hand. Opener Aryansh Sharma scored a masterful unbeaten 74 while Jamia Millia Islamia-graduate Sohaib Khan took the side home with his half-century.

UAE had a good outing with the bat in their first game against the BlackCaps. But the side's bowling led them down as the Kiwis registered a comfortable 10-wicket victory.

UAE haven't made any changes in their squad except one. Batter Muhammad Zohaib was sent back home due to "disciplinary issues" before the Canada game. He has been replaced by Syed Haider Shah.

Like Afghanistan, UAE also have two group games left. They have to register wins in both those games, including the one against the unbeaten South Africans. UAE is likely to field the same playing XI that played against Canada.

Afghanistan have an upper hand of 11-3 over UAE in head-to-head. Both sides met each other twice last year in a T20I tri-series (that also featured Pakistan) and the Afghans registered wins in both those matches. UAE's last win over Afghanistan came in December 2023. Notably, they haven't played against each other in a T20 WC game.

Notably, whichever team loses Monday's fixture will be officially eliminated from the race to qualify for the Super 8s. Who will win this match? Join us at 10 AM IST & local time on Monday for the live coverage.
