Paarl on a Tuesday evening, gifts us a last ball thriller and a record chase. The highest SA20 chase at this venue in the previous 3 seasons was 176. David Miller and his boys were determined to change that, and they did it with style. For Aiden Markram's Durban Super Giants, the playoffs spot seems to be running away. They are just not able to get over the line and are losing close contests. They need to win every game from here if they have any chance to push for that final four spot.
We move to Gqeberha tomorrow. Sunrisers Eastern Cape will take on the Joburg Super Kings.
On this note, I, Manan Mehta would like to take your leave on behalf of my colleagues Pritam Dey, Anirudh Modi and Yogesh Kumar. B-byeee!
Rubin Hermann (Player of the Match): "My heart is quite pumped, just trying to stay as calm as possible, and just kept believing we will win. We noticed that one good partnership will win us this game, Dan and I tried to stay calm, play some good shots, and tried to take it deep. If we had wickets in hand, we would have won.
It's great to rub shoulders and share the field with some of the greats. Being part of the same team, insead of trying to beat them. I am grateful for the supporters, we love playing at home, and we try to do the best for them. I'm glad we could give them a win today."
Player of the Match: Rubin Hermann
David Miller (Paarl Royals Captain): "Yeah our plan was to chase when we won the toss. Paarl generally gets better at night. It used to play differently earlier. However, this was a chasing wicket. Superb batting from the boys.
It is nice to have people stand up like this. We needed a big partnership. Often teams lose wickets in clusters. Luckily the boys batted well and really happy for Rubin.
Oh yes Raza is just everywhere. If nothing you will see him dive on the boundary and save runs. He is just a young 39-year-old man."
Time for the Post-Match Presentations...
Aiden Markram (Durban Super Giants Captain): "Yeah a lot to reflect on of course. Another close one and we are not on the right side of it. This is how the tournament works. Got to win the close ones. Just need to accept the opposition played well.
The wicket was a good one. 180 is a good score but I knew we needed to bowl well. They got crucial boundaries and took it away from us. Got to give credit to them where it is due.
I am not very sure how the table stacks up. We will do the math now and that is good. It gives the boys a chance to put the feet up. Then plan accordingly and hopefully execute it well."
12:33 AM IST, 9:03 PM Local Time | Sikandar Raza finishes off in style! A MAXIMUM to seal the highest chase at Boland Park ever! What a batting performance from Paarl, as they beat a strong Durban Super Giants by 6 wickets to take home the points!
Paarl Royals won the toss and elected to bowl first! After a shaky start, Aiden Markram stood tall for his team with an essential 66 runs off 46 balls, and along with Klaasen's 29 off 18, and Livingstone's unbeaten 32 off 10, Durban Super Giants were able to establish a total of 186/5 at the end of their 20 overs.
For Paarl, Mujeeb Ur Rahman was the best bowler with 2/22 from 4. Nqobani Mokoena picked up 2/56, and Bjorn Fortuin picked up a solitary wicket.
Come the chase, like Durban, Paarl were off to a rocky start. They lost both their openers in Asa Trible (3) and Lhuan-dre Pretorius (18) in the powerplay to Wiese and Bosch respectively. However, Dan Lawrence entered the contest, got himself off the mark with a six, and Paarl never looked back.
Dan Lawrence and Rubin Hermann went onto stitch together a match-winning partnership of 106 runs for the third wicket. Dan Lawrence was dismissed by Bosch after scoring 63 runs off 41 balls, and Narine followed it up with the wicket of David Miller in the very next over, which gave Durban some hope.
But Rubin Hermann held up one end to score an unbeaten 65 runs off 45 balls, and along with Sikandar Raza's late-innings cameo of 27 runs off 13 balls, ensured Paarl Royals got over the finish line today.
For Durban, Corbin Bosch was their best bowler with 2/29 from 4 overs. Sunil Narine and David Wiese picked up a wicket each.
Paarl Royals move to the second position on the points table, and Durban Super Giants remain in 5th with only 1 more game to go for them. This means it is more than likely that we will bid goodbye to Durban Super Giants in the league stage.
