For one final time, Alyssa Healy is taking the field in the ODIs as Australia Women lock horns with India Women in the third and final ODI of the series at Bellerive Oval, Hobart, on Sunday (March 1).
Healy, the Australian skipper, has already announced her retirement from international cricket after this multi-format series. If India dominated the T20Is and won the series 2-1, the Aussies have already taken an insurmountable 2-0 lead in the ODIs.
It is a multi-format series, and both teams are fighting hard to gain supremacy. Currently, Australia have a 6-4 lead. India will not only try to avoid the clean sweep but also to go level in the points tally before the red-ball cricket takes centre stage for the title decider.
Australia have been unfortunate with injuries, but their bench strength has responded well. After Ellyse Perry and Kim Garth missed the ODI series due to injury, all-rounder and the next Australian captain, Sophie Molineux, has been ruled out of the remainder of the series due to a back soreness she suffered in the first ODI in Brisbane. While Megan Schutt and Lucy Hamilton were named as Perry and Garth's replacements, the team management hasn't named a replacement for Molineux.
India haven't been able to maintain their ODI World Cup-winning form, courtesy of consecutive average batting performances. Smriti Mandhana and Pratika Rawal have scored a fifty each in the first and second ODIs, respectively. At the same time, Harmanpreet Kaur, with twin half-centuries, has tried to give India some respectability with the bat. With the likes of Jemimah Rodrigues, Deepti Sharma and Shafali Verma failing and very little contributions from the lower middle order, the visitors have found it tough to post a big total.
After bagging a golden duck in the series opener, young Georgia Voll bounced back with a match-winning century in the second ODI. She was nicely supported by Phoebe Litchfield, who failed to convert her start into a big one in Brisbane, scored a superb half-century, hitting a classy 80 and set up the run chase alongside Voll after Healy was dismissed early.
Australia's in-form top and middle order has really stepped up and made light work of India's totals of 214 and 251, chasing down in 38.2 and 36.1 overs, respectively, with 6 and 5 wickets in hand.
India's bowlers have struggled to stop the flow of runs. Shree Charani, Deepti Sharma and Kranti Gaud were the wicket takers in game one, while Deepti, Gaud and Kashvee Gautam were the wicket takers in the previous match. Kashvee has contributed with both bat and ball to somewhat keep her side in the hunt.
As we know, Australia have a quality bowling line-up. Schutt, Ashleigh Gardner, Alana King, & Annabel Sutherland have been tough to handle for the tourists.
India need to bat and bowl well if they are to challenge Australia in their backyard. Healy will look to end her ODI career on a high note, both as a batter and as a skipper. The reigning world champions will aim to spoil her party and will try to get level in the multi-format series points table. Can they do so?
