02:43 AM IST, 05:13 PM Local Time: A fine performance from South Africa as they register a 40-run victory against the West Indies to level the series 1-1. The visitors took this game as an opportunity to experiment with their bowlers and still ended up comfortable victors.
Chasing 310 for victory, the West Indies needed a big start and the opening pair of Hayley Matthews and Qiana Joseph seemed fluent from the beginning. However, Marizanne Kapp struck in the 7th over as the umpire adjudged Qiana Joseph to be caught behind even though the batter didn’t agree with the decision.
No.3 batter, Realeanna Grimmond played a few elegant drives as she began to stitch a partnership with the skipper Matthews. But she flattered to deceive as Nadine de Klerk had her caught behind in the 14th over. The run-rate took a dip after that as Stafanie Taylor consumed a lot of dot balls. Meanwhile, Hayley got to her fifty in the 16th over and she had the onus of batting long.
Yet, the introduction of Nonkululeko Mlaba worked the magic for South Africa as Hayley pulled a length delivery to Nondumiso Shangase at mid-on. A few overs later, Stafanie also miscued an attempted pull shot to short mid-wicket as the West Indies were reduced to 120/4. Thereafter, the experienced pair of Shemaine Campbelle and Chinelle Henry rebuilt the innings at a pretty rate to keep the team just alive.
The 50-run partnership was also brought up before Chinelle played an uppish cut to backward point where Annerie Dercksen took a sharp catch to give Nondumiso Shangase a wicket. With Laura Wolvaardt rotating the bowlers, Shemaine and Jannillea Glasgow got a few scoring opportunities as the scorecard kept ticking.
The wicket-keeper batter, Shemaine also registered her fifty off 55 balls in the 41st over. Mlaba once again struck at the end of the over though as Jannillea chipped a full and slow delivery to Wolvaardt at short extra-cover. In the next over, Kapp also induced a top-edge from Shemaine as the fielder at short fine-leg gobbled up a straight-forward catch. Mlaba also continued to showcase her quality by having Aaliyah Alleyne caught behind for her fourth wicket.
The remainder of the game was a mere formality with Zaida James getting 19 runs before she was dismissed by Chloe Tryon in the penultimate over of the match. In the end, the West Indies were rolled over for 269 on the final ball of the innings to end up on the losing side by 40 runs.
