Phew! A thrilling contest in Lahore saw England bow out of the Champions Trophy in the league stages. After the 2023 World Cup debacle, they failed to make it to the next round in another ICC ODI event. Azmatullah Omarzai's fifer and Ibrahim Zadran's record-shattering knock of 177 helped Afghanistan keep their campaign alive. They will be back in Lahore in a couple of days to take on Australia in another knockout game.
Tomorrow, it will be the only dead rubber of this tournament where Pakistan will take on Bangladesh in Rawalpindi. Both teams are already out of the race for semis.
For now, this is Ajay Pal Singh signing off on behalf of my colleagues AkshayaKrishna Polya, Akshay Bhide, Pritam Dey, Raju Khariya, Paras Yadav, and Zeeshan Naiyer. Goodnight bye, bye.
Hashmatullah Shahidi (Afghanistan Captain): "Thank you very much. As a team, we are happy. I know all of the nation will be happy with this win. Onto the next game.
First time we beat them in 2023 World Cup. I think I keep saying, we keep improving day by day as a team. That's what we showed in the last couple of World Cups. Today, I think it was a tense game. We controlled it well and got the result.
(On Ibrahim Zadran) He's absolutely brilliant, talented guy. We were three down early. Too much pressure but that partnership between him and me was good. It was one of the best innings I have seen in ODI cricket.
Azmat also played well after I lost my wicket. He played with very good intent. He scored runs, and with the ball, he took wickets when the pressure was on.
The beauty of our team is that we have talented youngsters as well as experienced guys. Everyone knows their role. Hopefully, we take this momentum to the Australia game. 100 percent it will give us a lot of confidence. That game will decide whether we go to semis or not. We will try to control what we can on the field."
Jos Buttler (England Captain): "Obviously, it has been a really disappointing tournament. It was a fantastic game of cricket, and we had our chances tonight. I'm gutted to come on the wrong side of the result.
Joe Root played an incredible innings. It was an unbelievable knock from him. He and Jamie Overton put up a good fight. That partnership between them kept us in the game but eventually, it got away from us. We needed one of the top 6 batters to be with Root.
The game actually got away from us in the last 10 overs of the first innings. Credit to Ibrahim Zadran. He played a fantastic innings. If we look back and reflect, 113 runs off the last 10 overs pushed them up to a score that was a very good score on that pitch.
Unfortunately, in his 4th over, Mark Wood felt his knee; credit to him for bowling through the pain and showing a lot of character. It was difficult to manage in the death overs. Wood was injured. Root had to bowl. Livingstone was also off the field for a while with an injury, but credit to him for coming back.
The way Root handled pressure in a run-chase was good to watch. He needed one of the other top six batters to stay in with him and take the game deeper. He has been a brilliant player in all formats. His ODI record is fantastic.
If I knew, I wouldn't be playing the way I am. Being one of the best players in the world, it is really disappointing when you don't perform.
(Speaking of his captaincy) I don't want to make any emotional statements right now. But I think for myself and the other guys at the top, we should consider all possibilities."
