Milestone
That brings us to the end of our coverage of this first Test between New Zealand and England. The hosts dropped too many catches and paid the price for it. England showed what they are capable of when it comes to chasing targets in Test cricket.

This is Ajay Pal Singh signing off on behalf of my colleague Vishnu Verma. Good bye!!!!
The last time England lost the first Test of any series was back in 2023, when they lost in Birmingham against Australia in the Ashes. Since then, the English side has won five series openers, including this one at the Hagley Oval.

Ben Stokes (England Captain): Yeah very good. We were put under pressure but I guess our bowlers were relentless throughout. You need a little luck around the way but if the opposition is dropping catches left right and center, you can't complain. You have to make it count. He's an incredible talent, constantly looking to put pressure onto the opposition.

Brydon I have known him from Durham days. He is an absolutely a workhorse. He will keep charging in day in and day out. Nice for him to get the rewards.

(on Jacob Bethell) Chasing those little targets can sometimes be difficult... Beth has grown into his own in that little period there. He's been playing like that all summer in the white-ball team, so nice to see him do it in whites.

Batting slightly down the order, but when Gus and Carsey come down the order and play like that... having a long batting line-up is pretty valuable.

I've not spent that much time out in the middle for a long time. It's been a pretty heavy week this week, bowled 20 overs, lot of time in the field, spent some time in the middle and hurt my back diving for a ball as well.

It's more management than anything else. With where we were in the game, it didn't feel necessary to eke out any more balls than I needed to. I think the body is going to be good for this outing, and I'm raring to go for Wellington. I will see it in Wellington (on possible changes to the playing XI)."
The previous bowler to take 10 wickets in an away Test match for England was Monty Panesar (11/210) against India at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai in 2012. Brydon Carse broke the jinx after 12 years with a 10-fer in this Test match.
Tom Latham (New Zealand Captain): "Yeah, you are right. I guess in the position we were, we were happy with that. If the catches go to hand, it would have been a different result.

The partnerships we were able to build on the first day were great... We had our moments. Things could have been slightly different but a quality team like England put you under pressure. Somedays, it just doesn't quite go your way. We don't mean to drop catches. Hope we do better next time around.

For everyone it's about trying to contribute as best they can... I'm no different. We're working hard to produce runs and wickets. That won't change over the next couple of days.

Guys will be working hard, and we will look to bounce back in Wellington. From our point of view, we wanted to get the win in Hagley. But we want to come out and put a better performance in Wellington."
Brydon Carse (POTM): "Yeah ofcourse very proud of the outcome. We were thrown different challenges but we stuck around as a group.

Everyone contributed in many ways. The plans we had came off. Definitely, the surface in Pakistan were different to what it was here. There is a lot of bounce and carry and that suits my style.

Me and Gus have a good relationship. Good to have a few edges go all the way."
