Born on 18 April 1992, KL Rahul is a lanky, elegant right-hand batter and also reliable with the gloves. He is among the most highly rated batters in India's current set-up. Though KL Rahul’s stats don’t do justice to his legacy, his ability with the gloves and willingness to bat up or down the order make him one of the most selfless players on the international stage.
He has all the shots in his arsenal and does not have a notable weakness against either pacer or spinners. Ability to bat through the overs and hold the innings together. Or, hitting out the pacers over the top in remarkable fashion, Rahul has the class and the mindset to do it all on the cricket field.
Rahul broke through into the lower middle order and did justice to his talents in the series against New Zealand at their home turf. Rahul set the record for the fastest batsman to have scored centuries in all three formats in just 20 innings. Arriving on the international scene in 2014, Rahul has come a long way.
KL Rahul’s Domestic Career
Rahul made his first-class debut for Karnataka in the 2010-11 season. The same year, he played for India in the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup. In the 2013-14 domestic season, he smashed 1,033 first-class runs, the second highest that season.
His most notable performances came in the final of the Duleep Trophy 2014-15. He scored 185 off 233 balls in the first innings and 130 off 152 in the second. His phenomenal run helped him gain a maiden India call-up. Later on that season, Rahul became Karnataka’s first triple-centurion, scoring 337 against Uttar Pradesh.
In January 2026, Rahul returned to represent Karnataka in the 2025-25 Vijay Hazare Trophy after a six-year gap, having last appeared in the tournament in 2019.
KL Rahul’s Test Career
KL Rahul made his Test debut in the 2014 Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, replacing Rohit Sharma. Despite a sedate start to his career, in the next Test, he opened the innings for the first time and made his maiden international century, scoring 110 runs.
During the 2015-16 season, Rahul continued to prove his mettle, cementing his spot as an opener in the Indian Test squad. The wicket-keeper batter’s prolific average of 59.88 displays his dominance during the time in the longest format.
Notably, his career-best performance came in the fifth game of the England series in the 2016-17 Test series, scoring his career-best 199 runs.
However, the versatile batter witnessed a dip in runs, highlighted by a mixed tour of England, where he struggled early but ended with a brilliant 149 at The Oval, totalling 299 runs in 5 games and 10 innings.
On top of that, his 2018-19 Australia tour was largely poor, managing only 57 in 5 innings. Thus, showing inconsistency despite flashes of skill and leading to his exclusion mid-series.
After these disappointing series, KL Rahul, who is renowned for his textbook elegance, evolved from a fluent, top-hand dominant opener into a more cautious batter. Over time, he has adjusted his stance and can change into a more defensive gear under pressure. One of the most notable changes is that he started moving toward middle/off stump, and seems to use soft hands to drop the ball for quick singles against spin and to play late.
These technical tweaks have helped Rahul unleash a better version of himself, especially overseas, where the pitches are faster, harder, bouncy, and grassy, aiding pace, swing, and seam movement.
KL Rahul’s ODI Career
Along the way, KL Rahul made his ODI debut against Zimbabwe at Harare Sports Club in 2016. Rahul exploded on the big stage with a 115-ball 100* on his debut, becoming the first Indian cricketer to score a century on an ODI debut.
In an unexpected move, on 11 January 2019, Rahul, alongside Hardik Pandya, was suspended by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) following misogynistic comments they made on the talk show, Koffee with Karan. They were both sent home ahead of the ODI series against Australia and the fixtures of India's tour to New Zealand.
On 24 January 2019, after lifting the suspensions on Pandya and Rahul, the BCCI announced that Rahul would rejoin the India A squad for India A matches.
Later the same year, KL Rahul was given the opportunity to step up as an opener after Shikhar Dhawan’s injury in the 2019 World Cup. He played a vital role, scoring 361 runs in 9 innings at an average of 45.13, including one century, 111 vs Sri Lanka and two fifties. He finished as India’s third-highest run-scorer.
Fast forward to 2023, Rahul scored an unbeaten 111 off 106 balls in the Asia Cup 2023 against arch-rivals Pakistan after returning from a quadriceps injury that kept him away for four months. Following a successful Asia Cup, he was named in the squad for the 2023 Cricket World Cup.
Rahul started his campaign with an unbeaten 97 against Australia, rescuing team India after the loss of 3 wickets at the score of 2. Notably, in the final group-stage match of the World Cup against the Netherlands at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Rahul recorded the fastest century by an Indian batter in the tournament, reaching the milestone in 62 deliveries.
In the much-dreaded final against Australia, despite being the top scorer with 66 runs off 107 balls, Rahul was heavily criticised by experts and fans for his slow innings. Eventually, India’s fairytale World Cup campaign ended in a heartbreaking loss to the Aussies at the Narendra Modi Stadium.
KL Rahul’s T20I Career
In contrast to his ODI debut, Rahul got out on a golden duck on his T20I debut on June 18, 2016. However, in the same year, he made his first T20I century in just 46 balls and went on to score an unbeaten 110 off 51 balls. Thus, he became the first player to score a T20I century while batting at number four in a one-run defeat while in pursuit of 246, the highest T20I run chase at that time.
In his 20th international innings, Rahul became the fastest batsman to have scored centuries in all three formats, surpassing the record of Ahmed Shehzad, who took 76 innings.
Meanwhile, he is also the first Indian batter to be dismissed hit-wicket in T20Is.
KL Rahul, sadly, has lost his place in the T20I side but is currently being looked at as a vital cog in the longer formats.
KL Rahul’s IPL Career
Rahul made his Indian Premier League (IPL) debut for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) during the 2013 season. Ahead of the 2014 IPL, he was bought by the Sunrisers Hyderabad for INR 1 crore.
Rahul had successful stints in the league with Bangalore and Hyderabad before joining Punjab Kings (then Kings XI Punjab) in 2018. In his first match for the team, he broke the league record for the fastest half-century by scoring 50 off just 14 balls.
Before the IPL 2020, the Punjab management revamped the team and roped in Anil Kumble as the head coach, along with asking KL Rahul to lead the side. Rahul won the Orange Cap, leading from the front, amassing 670 runs in 14 matches, but Punjab failed to qualify for the playoffs.
Scoring over 500 runs in the five consecutive IPL seasons from 2018-22, Rahul has been in destructive form in the coveted tournament. Nonetheless, the Punjab Kings released him ahead of IPL 2022, and he was transferred to Lucknow Super Giants, where he captained the franchise in 3 editions. Under his leadership, Lucknow reached the playoffs in 2022.
In the IPL 2025 Auction, after being released by LSG, Rahul was acquired by the Delhi Capitals for a whopping INR 14 Crore. The wicket-keeper batter had a phenomenal run with his new franchise, amassing 539 runs in 13 innings. Meanwhile, Rahul’s ‘Kantara style’ century celebration against RCB drew him a lot of attention.
