Gulbadin Naib’s Early Life & Background

Gulbadin Naib was born on June 4, 1991, in Puli Alam, Logar Province, Afghanistan. His early childhood was shaped by conflict and instability, forcing his family to spend years in refugee camps in Peshawar, Pakistan. 

Life was difficult — his father struggled to find steady work, his mother battled illness, and the family had to care for a disabled sibling. Despite these hardships, Naib found solace in sport, particularly cricket, which he played on streets and makeshift grounds whenever possible.

Before fully committing to cricket, Naib was deeply drawn to bodybuilding. Inspired by Arnold Schwarzenegger, he trained seriously in local gyms, a passion that later became widely known through the documentary “Out of the Ashes”, which captured him lifting weights in Kabul. This fitness background shaped his powerful physique and gave birth to his iconic “bicep flex” celebration, which fans still associate with him today.

Eventually, his family returned to Puli Alam, where his father supported them by running a small fruit stall. It was during this period that Naib intensified his focus on cricket, progressing rapidly through local and regional levels. Despite being dropped from the national setup at one point, his perseverance saw him fight his way back, eventually becoming one of Afghanistan’s most dependable all-rounders.

Gulbadin Naib’s Domestic Career

Gulbadin Naib made his List A debut in 2011 when Afghanistan became the first international side to tour Pakistan after the 2009 Sri Lanka attack, playing two unofficial ODIs against Pakistan A. 

Around the same time, he featured in Pakistan’s domestic T20 competition, representing the Afghan Cheetahs in the Faysal Bank T20 Cup, where he impressed with aggressive batting, including a maiden T20 fifty.

In 2018, Naib was selected in Balkh’s squad for the inaugural Afghanistan Premier League, gaining further experience in high-pressure franchise cricket. Later that year, he was picked by the Sylhet Sixers in the Bangladesh Premier League draft, marking another step in his global T20 journey. Though he has not been a regular fixture in major franchise leagues, his presence in domestic and regional competitions has helped him refine his all-round skills and maintain match sharpness over the years.

Gulbadin Naib’s International Career

Gulbadin Naib’s international career spans over a decade, beginning with his ODI debut in 2011 and extending through multiple World Cups, Asia Cups, and bilateral series. He has represented Afghanistan across formats, though his impact has been most significant in limited-overs cricket.

Gulbadin Naib has had a brief but meaningful presence in Afghanistan’s Test history, featuring during the formative years of the nation’s journey in the longest format. His role in red-ball cricket was largely that of a bowling all-rounder — someone who could provide control with the ball while adding depth to the lower-middle order with the bat.

Naib made his Test debut on 27 October 2018 in a one-off match against Ireland in Dehradun, a fixture that came at a time when Afghanistan was still finding its footing as a Full Member nation. While he was never positioned as a frontline strike bowler, his disciplined seam bowling made him a useful support option, particularly in holding an end and creating pressure in longer spells. 

However, as Afghanistan’s focus increasingly shifted toward white-ball success, Naib gradually moved away from Test cricket. 

Gulbadin Naib’s ODI Career

Gulbadin Naib made his ODI debut on 9 August 2011 against Canada, marking the beginning of a long and eventful 50-over career. Over the years, he developed into a dependable lower-middle-order batter and a handy fast-medium option, particularly effective in breaking partnerships.

A defining moment in his ODI career came in May 2019, just before the Cricket World Cup, when he recorded his first five-wicket haul, taking 6/43 against Ireland — the third-best ODI bowling figures in Afghanistan’s history at that time. This performance reinforced his status as a genuine all-rounder in Afghanistan’s setup.

During the 2019 Cricket World Cup, Naib captained Afghanistan in all matches, becoming one of the few players to lead his country on the world’s biggest stage. On 24 June 2019, in a match against Bangladesh, he played his 100th international game for Afghanistan and also crossed 1,000 ODI runs in the same match — a significant personal milestone.

Throughout his ODI journey, Naib has been valued for his ability to score quick runs in the death overs and provide control with the ball when needed. Even after stepping down from captaincy following the 2019 World Cup, he remained a key squad member, continuing to contribute with both bat and ball in bilateral series and major tournaments.

Gulbadin Naib’s T20I Career

Gulbadin Naib made his T20I debut for Afghanistan during the 2012 World T20 Qualifier against the Netherlands. In his early T20I years, he was mainly seen as a middle-order hitter who could accelerate in the final overs while also offering useful seam-bowling options.

One of his standout T20I performances came during the 2012 ICC T20 World Cup, where he scored 44 against England — the only Afghan batter to reach double figures in a tough match — demonstrating his temperament against top-tier opposition.

Over time, Naib evolved into a tactical bowling option, often used as a partnership breaker rather than a frontline seamer. His most remarkable T20I achievement arrived in the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, during Afghanistan’s historic Super 8 match against Australia. Brought on as Afghanistan’s eighth bowling option, Naib delivered a career-best spell of 4/20, playing a decisive role in Afghanistan’s famous victory. This performance made him the first bowler in men’s World Cup history (ODI or T20) to take four wickets after being the eighth bowling option, a truly unique feat.

During the 2024 T20 World Cup, the all-rounder was involved in a widely discussed moment in Afghanistan’s Super 8 match against Bangladesh. With rain affecting play and Afghanistan narrowly ahead on the DLS par score, television cameras showed the team being urged to slow the game down. Soon after, Naib — fielding at slip — went down holding his hamstring and received on-field treatment.

After a brief delay, he returned to the field, appearing fit, later bowling a key over and taking an important wicket as Afghanistan secured a historic semi-final qualification. The incident sparked mixed reactions from commentators and players, though captain Rashid Khan attributed it to cramp, and no ICC sanction or investigation followed.

Naib has remained a regular member of Afghanistan’s T20I setup, contributing as a flexible all-rounder and experienced campaigner, particularly in high-pressure tournament matches.

Gulbadin Naib’s IPL Career

Gulbadin Naib’s IPL experience came in 2024, when he was signed by the Delhi Capitals as a mid-season replacement for the injured Mitchell Marsh at his base price of INR 50 lakh. Although he played only two matches, Naib later stated that the exposure to high-intensity IPL cricket boosted his confidence ahead of Afghanistan’s deep run in the 2024 T20 World Cup.

Despite this experience, Naib was not picked up in the 2025 or 2026 IPL auctions. For the IPL 2026 auction, he entered with an increased base price of INR 1 crore but went unsold.
