Daniel Herbert Lategan is a promising left-handed top-order batter whose cricketing journey reflects steady growth, resilience, and maturity. A product of Durbanville Cricket Club and Western Province age-group cricket, the Cape Town-born teenager was recognised early for his ability to bat long hours and absorb pressure. Coaches often recall how he would refuse to leave the nets until he mastered a particular drill.

Lategan shone in Western Province Premier League cricket, compiling consistent scores that made him one of the standout youngsters in Cape Town. Representing Western Province at the age-group and club level, he produced several match-defining knocks. A notable innings came when he carried his bat deep into the game for Durbanville CC, guiding them to a crucial win, underlining his ability to adapt across formats.

The Cape Town-born was part of the Durbanville Cricket Club’s title-winning 2024-25 Western Province Cricket Association Premier League team.

Lategan joined the Worcestershire County Cricket Club academy in England at the under-15 level and, after progressing through to the second-XI, signed a three-year professional contract with the county in July 2025.

“It is a dream come true to be signing my first pro contract. I’m very thankful for everyone who has helped me along the way and I couldn’t be happier, Representing such a great club is an honour. The lads at the club are a great bunch and the changing room is a great environment," Lategan said after signing the contract. 

On his List A debut in the One-Day Cup against Derbyshire, he scored a composed 42* off 39 balls, showcasing his temperament in a chase. He followed it with his maiden List A half-century against Surrey, cementing his place. His standout innings came in the semi-final against Somerset, where he top-scored with 78 off 82 balls under knockout pressure. The 2006-born batter played a crucial role in Worcestershire's victory in the One-Day Cup trophy in September 2025. 

Though still adapting to the red-ball format after making his first-class debut in September 2025, he has shown glimpses of promise with a top score of 44 across his first few games. His willingness to play long innings is seen as a strong foundation for future success.

Former English spinner and Worcestershire CEO Ashley Giles said, "We see Dan having huge potential in the medium and long term. He has all the skills to make him a really successful first-class cricketer."

More was in store for Lategan this year. He was picked up by the MI Cape Town for 400,000 ZAR for the SA20 2025/26 season. 

His calm dressing-room presence, eagerness to learn from seniors, and proven ability in county cricket mark him as one of South Africa’s most exciting batting prospects for the future.
