Player Bio

Jacob Johannes Basson is one of South Africa’s most promising young bowlers. A left-arm medium pacer, he has quickly become a key figure in youth and domestic cricket, known for his ability to swing the ball and take early wickets.

Born and raised in a cricket-loving household in the Gauteng region, Basson’s love for the game started early. He spent countless hours in the backyard perfecting his bowling action and practising cover drives with a taped tennis ball. This dedication helped him rise quickly through Lions’ age-group teams, where he became known for his discipline and consistency.

The 2008-born boy is yet to make his debut in first-class and List A cricket. However, he has played for his province's age-group teams and then became a part of the Proteas U-19 set-up.

The teenager first played for the South Africa U-19 Emerging Team against Zimbabwe in a five-match one-day series in September 2024. Basson, along with his pacer colleague Ntando Soni, troubled the opposition batters throughout the series in which South Africa whitewashed Zimbabwe. Basson was the top wicket-taker of the series with nine wickets.

Basson made a mark in a Youth ODI tri-series in July 2025, taking two four-wicket hauls against Bangladesh U-19 in Harare. However, the South Africa U-19 side failed to win the tournament. Observers noted his ability to stay calm under pressure and execute plans against top-order batsmen.

In fact, in 2024, in a local Johannesburg tournament called the Jozi Cup, Basson took nine wickets in a limited-overs game.

For the SA20 league 2025/26 season, Basson has signed a rookie contract with the Paarl Royals.

Off the field, Basson is described as focused yet approachable, balancing cricket with studies and enjoying downtime with friends and family.
