Player Bio
A very dependable middle-order batsman who is also a frontline spinner for West Indies especially in the longest format, Roston Chase has evolved himself as one of their most consistent run-scorers since making his Test debut against India in 2016. He scored a sensational century in just his second Test against the mighty Indians and made sure that his team saved the Test match on the final day. He scored 137 runs and defied a top-class Indian bowling attack along with Jason Holder.
To show such maturity in his debut series speaks volumes about a man who has gone onto cement his place in the side. Touted as a Test specialist at the start of his career, Chase has honed his skills in the limited-overs format as well as has established himself in all three formats of the game. He is among those very few West Indies cricketers who haven’t been drawn towards the glittering T20 leagues all across the world and focuses on Test cricket, a trait that is almost lost in the Caribbean shores.
Despite being a frontline spinner for his side, Chase hasn’t managed to get a truckload of wickets and his average in any format is nothing to write off. However, his abilities with the bat have already made him one of the most dependable batsmen in the Windies middle order. It was in 2017, just a year after making his Test debut that Chase was named as the Cricketer of the Year and the Test Cricketer of the Year by the West Indies Players’ Association.
Some quality performances for Barbados in the domestic circuit paved the way for his inclusion in the national side for the series against India in 2016. Apart from scoring his maiden Test century in the second Test, Chase also starred with the ball and bagged his maiden five-wicket haul before weaving his magic with the bat. His knock against India was not just a one-match affair. His twin centuries against Pakistan almost ensured that West Indies saved the series only for his team to lose the final Test in the penultimate over of the match. In a Windies side, which resembles brute force and T20 cricket, Chase is from a different breed altogether. He loves playing the traditional format and has shown time and again why he is one of the finds for the West Indies in the longest format.
