Player Bio

Uma Chetry, a right-handed batter and a specialized wicketkeeper, represents Assam Women’s team in the domestic circuit and UP Warriorz in the Women’s Premier League (WPL). Born in the Golaghat district of Assam, Chetry rose from the streets to the international arena, and her journey speaks volumes about her determination and commitment.

Uma Chetry is the only girl among her five siblings, and she has been fascinated by cricket ever since her jolly childhood. As a kid, she used to play on the streets alongside her brother, Bijoy Chetri, and other boys. Her mother recognized her talent and encouraged her to pursue cricket professionally.

The seed blossomed for the young cricketer as she was selected in the India A, in June 2023, for the ACC Women's T20 Emerging Teams Asia Cup, marking a significant milestone in her domestic career.

In July 2023, Chetry got her maiden call-up for international cricket as the world found her name in the Indian Women’s T20 Squad for the T20I series against Bangladesh. Although she didn’t get an appearance, the step was significant for her to gain experience and know international standards.

On July 7, 2024, against South Africa Women, at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, she made a historic debut, becoming the first female cricketer from Assam and the Northeast region of India to represent the national team.

One of Chetry's notable performances came in the 2022 Asian Games held in Hangzhou, China. She and her team clinched a gold medal in their maiden appearance.

The anticipation for a WPL contract was desperate. She had international experience alongside her ability to be a match-winner. She was signed by UP Warriorz and played her debut match on March 7, 2024, against Mumbai Indians. She came in as a replacement for Vrinda Dinesh.

The keeper-batter has a technical approach to her game. She likes to smash the bowlers, but she also has the ability to anchor the innings. With the gloves, she has been phenomenal, she is as quick as the speed of light. Her dual kills enhance team dynamics, providing flexibility in team compositions and strategies.
