Fergus Patrick O'Neill has rapidly established himself as one of Australian domestic cricket’s most dangerous seam bowlers — not through raw, eye-watering speed, but through relentless accuracy, clever seam movement, and match-winning instincts.
Born in Tauranga, New Zealand, O'Neill moved to Victoria at a young age and came up through the Melbourne Premier Cricket system. His performances in club cricket signalled early promise: during one Premier season, he claimed 57 wickets at an average of around 18.
The 2001-born seamer made his List A debut for Victoria in the Marsh One-Day Cup in March 2022, before graduating to the Sheffield Shield in the 2022-23 season.
However, the 2023-24 season was his breakout year. O'Neill finished as Victoria’s top fast bowler, taking 40 wickets at about 17.25. His haul included a ten-wicket match (five in each innings) in Victoria’s win over South Australia. That year, he also won a clutch of awards: Shield Player of the Year for his state, and the Bradman Young Cricketer of the Year.
The 2001-born bowler can lay claim to being the best seamer in Sheffield Shield cricket for the past two seasons (2023-24 and 2024-25). His first-class record is stunning - 134 wickets at 20.37 from 34 matches, striking at 48.4 and conceding just 2.52 runs per over. He's twice been picked for Australia A, including on the recent tour of India, which shows the national selectors' respect for what he has accomplished with Victoria.
In 2025, O'Neill signed a short-term contract with Nottinghamshire in England. There, in just four County Championship matches, he claimed 21 wickets and helped his county side lift the title.
"It was so much fun...I learnt that I like the Dukes ball a bit more than the Kookaburra, and certainly a lot more than the SG," O'Neill said about his county cricket experience in an interview with ESPN.
O'Neill made his Big Bash debut for Melbourne Renegades in January 2024. He will continue to stay associated with the Renegades for the 2025-26 season.
If he continues on his current trajectory — leading wicket-taker seasons, strong overseas stints, and performances in Shield matches — many expect that a call to Australia A, and perhaps a Test debut, may not be far off.
