Player Bio

Mihlali Mpongwana has grown into one of Western Province’s most dependable seam bowling all-rounders in South African domestic cricket. Mpongwana’s journey reflects patience, discipline, and a deep love for the game nurtured since his schoolboy days at Wynberg Boys’ High, a cradle for many talented Proteas.

The 2000-born youngster came through the age-group cricket matches and represented the U-15 Western Province team.

Mpongwana made his first-class and List A debut for Western Province in 2019 and quickly established himself as a reliable lower-middle-order batsman and useful seam bowler. His breakout came during the 2021–22 CSA One-Day Cup when he scored several crucial knocks down the order and picked up timely wickets, helping Province stay competitive after their promotion to Division One. His unbeaten 73 against the Titans in 2023 was particularly memorable — a match where he carried the team through a pressure chase with maturity beyond his years.

In July 2024, he was appointed captain of the South Africa Emerging Players for the tour of Zimbabwe. In May 2025, Mpongwana toured with the South Africa A side to the Caribbean, where he produced several good performances.

A few months later, Mpongwana made his international debut for the Proteas against the BlackCaps in an ODI in Lahore in February 2025. However, he has travelled with the international side as part of its squad for various series on a few occasions.

Mpongwana is part of South Africa's A squad for the two four-day games series against India A in India in November 2025.

Interestingly, even without an SA20 contract, the Cape Town-born lad was selected in South Africa's squad for a T20I home series against India in November 2024.

Proteas T20I skipper Aiden Markram has said great things about Mpongwana. "He is a young guy, and he thinks about the game in a great way. He is pretty street-wise when it comes to his plans and adapting to conditions."

Still in his 20s, Mpongwana continues to develop steadily — a hardworking cricketer grounded in humility, yet quietly chasing bigger dreams with the Proteas.
