Player Bio

Mitchell Owen’s rise in Australian cricket has been steady, powerful, and increasingly impossible to ignore. A Tasmania-born all-rounder, Owen first came into the spotlight after signing with the Hobart Hurricanes ahead of Big Bash League Season 10, marking the beginning of his journey at the top level of domestic T20 cricket.

Primarily a right-arm medium pacer, Owen adds significant value with the bat, especially in the lower and middle order. His ability to strike cleanly from ball one has made him a genuine match-changer, capable of shifting momentum in a matter of overs. That power has translated into elite numbers in T20 cricket, where he strikes at over 180 and already has two centuries to his name.

The Tasmania-born's development pathway ran through Tasmania’s Second XI, where he refined his skills before earning senior opportunities. He was a familiar face in Hobart’s club circuit, representing New Town before stepping up to state and franchise cricket. His List A debut came during the 2020–21 Marsh One-Day Cup for Tasmania, followed soon after by his Twenty20 debut for the Hobart Hurricanes on 12 January 2021 in the Big Bash League. He later added first-class cricket to his résumé, debuting for Tasmania against South Australia on 3 October 2023 in the Sheffield Shield.

The 2024–25 BBL season proved to be a defining chapter. On 21 December 2024, Owen announced himself as a genuine BBL star with a commanding unbeaten 101 against the Perth Scorchers, guiding the Hurricanes to an eight-wicket victory. Just weeks later, on 27 January 2025, he produced a performance for the ages in the BBL final, smashing 108 off just 42 balls against Sydney Thunder. That innings equalled the record for the fastest century in a BBL final and played a central role in delivering Hobart Hurricanes their maiden league title.

His exploits were soon rewarded beyond Australian shores. In June 2025, Owen earned his maiden international call-up after being named in Australia’s T20I squad for the tour of the West Indies. Around the same time, his power-hitting caught the attention of IPL franchises, with the Punjab Kings signing him as a replacement player for Glenn Maxwell for IPL 2025 at a fee of INR 3 crore. His impact and upside were underlined further when he was retained for the 2026 IPL season.

As he heads into the 2025–26 Big Bash League with the Hobart Hurricanes, Mitchell Owen stands as one of Australia’s most exciting modern all-rounders—athletic, fearless, and built for the biggest stages.
