Player Bio
Steven Mullaney is a seasoned campaigner in English county. An allrounder who started as a seam-bowler, batting in lower-order but as Mullaney’s career progressed, he became an opener to be a central figure in Nottinghamshire's first XI.
The Cheshire-born featured in the England U-19 squad on the tour of Sri Lanka and India and was also part of the English team during the 2006 Youth World Cup. Post the event, Mullaney was contracted by Lancashire but because of a lack of opportunities at the county, the youngster had to shift his base.
At the end of the 2009 season, he turned down a two-year contract with Lancashire and signed with Nottinghamshire to make an immediate impression with a hundred on championship debut in 2010. As Mullaney started to contribute to his county’s success, he got awarded by moving the order after the regular opener, Ed Cowan, halted his services before the Ashes of 2013.
Mullaney became an integral cog in Notts’ set-up and established a reputation as an outstanding fielder, wicket-taking bowler, and punchy stroke player. In 2016, he scored 1000 plus runs in the Championship and also scalped important wickets. The following year was again a blockbuster for Mullaney with both bat and ball. Later, he was also appointed as Nottinghamshire’s skipper, post the retirement of Chris Read.
The allrounder led the club in 2018 with some immense success but injury severely hampered Mullaney's 2019 season. However, the skipper returned to hit a career-best 179 when opening the batting against Warwickshire towards the end of the season and contributed well enough across all formats that season.
In 2021, Mullaney was drafted into the Trent Rockets’ squad for the inaugural edition of 'The Hundred'. The allrounder brings a lot of cricketing and leadership experience to the franchise and his presence could help the Rockets clinch the maiden title.
