A cricketing graduate from the Kingston Cricket Club, Brandon King has been a prolific domestic run-getter from an early age and has done well as a middle-order stroke player within the teams he has played for. The top-order batter was a standout at the Under-19 level, going on to represent Jamaica and then the West Indies at the 2014 U-19 World Cup.
King broke into the national side on the back of a stellar performance in CPL 2019. In that tournament, the Jamaican smashed 132 runs in 72 balls, including 7 sixes against Barbados Tridents in the Caribbean Premier League, which became the highest-ever score by a batter in the coveted tournament.
Right after the CPL, the flashy batter was added to the West Indies ODI squad and T20I squads for their series against Afghanistan in India in October 2019. Both series were memorable for the youngster, as he made valuable contributions and clean-swept Afghanistan.
Brandon King’s rise in 2021 marked a significant breakthrough on the international stage. In March, he earned his ODI debut against Sri Lanka, immediately showing glimpses of the dependable top-order batter the West Indies had been seeking. His composure and technique under pressure hinted at a promising future. By August, King had cemented his spot in the T20I squad, putting in valuable contributions during the series against Pakistan. His ability to adapt quickly to the demands of the shortest format helped the Windies maintain their competitive edge.
In March 2022, Brandon King made his much-anticipated Indian Premier League debut after being signed by the Rajasthan Royals as a replacement for Jos Buttler. Stepping into the high-pressure environment of the IPL, King quickly made his presence felt, playing a pivotal role in the Royals’ batting lineup. His powerful hitting and ability to accelerate the innings earned him recognition as a reliable middle-order batter capable of changing the course of a match.
Later that year, King’s explosive form reached new heights in the Caribbean Premier League. Representing the Jamaica Tallawahs, he was instrumental in their charge to the title, delivering a series of match-winning performances throughout the tournament. His standout innings came in the final against the Barbados Royals, where he scored a commanding 83 runs, anchoring the team’s successful chase and leading them to their third CPL championship. This innings not only underscored King’s talent but also his knack for performing on the biggest stages.
In July 2023, Brandon King played a crucial role in the West Indies’ hard-fought 3-2 T20I series victory over India. He amassed an impressive 173 runs across the series, showcasing both consistency and the ability to deliver under pressure. His match-winning unbeaten 85 in the final T20I proved decisive, sealing the series and highlighting his growing importance in the West Indies’ limited-overs setup.
Continuing his strong momentum, King carried his form into the Caribbean Premier League later that year. Representing the Guyana Amazon Warriors, he was a key contributor throughout the tournament, providing valuable runs at critical moments and helping his team maintain a competitive edge. His performances reaffirmed his status as one of the region’s most reliable and explosive batters in franchise cricket.
In May 2024, Brandon King stepped up as stand-in captain during the West Indies’ T20I series against South Africa. Leading from the front, he scored a commanding 79 off 45 balls in the first match, steering his team to a 28-run victory. This innings showcased his leadership qualities alongside his batting prowess, setting a confident tone for the series.
However, June brought a setback as King was ruled out of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup after suffering a side strain during the Super Eight clash against England. The injury was a disappointment for both him and the team, halting his momentum at a crucial moment on the global stage.
King bounced back strongly later in the year. In November 2024, during the ODI series against England, he played a majestic 102 in the third ODI, anchoring a massive 209-run partnership with Keacy Carty. Their stand not only secured a series-clinching win but also reaffirmed King’s status as a key middle-order batters for the Windies.
Following that, in December 2024 against Bangladesh, King continued his impressive run of form, scoring a vital 82 in the second ODI. His innings was instrumental in guiding the West Indies to another series-clinching victory, underscoring his ability to perform consistently in high-pressure situations.
In February 2025, Brandon King made a strong return to the Indian Premier League, joining the Gujarat Titans. Throughout the season, he delivered several impactful innings, most notably a match-winning 43 runs off 34 balls against the Delhi Capitals. His ability to accelerate the innings and finish games under pressure highlighted his growth as a dependable middle-order batsman in franchise cricket.
Looking ahead, King’s trajectory suggests a promising future filled with leadership opportunities and further batting milestones. With experience now under his belt across major T20 leagues and international formats, he is poised to become a cornerstone of West Indies cricket. Whether guiding younger players or anchoring innings in high-stakes matches, King’s journey is set to define the next era of Caribbean cricket excellence.
