Naveen-ul-Haq is one of Afghanistan’s most skilled white-ball fast bowlers, known for his deceptive pace, sharp slower balls, and calm temperament under pressure. Making his international debut as a teenager, Naveen quickly rose through the ranks to become a key component of Afghanistan’s T20 bowling attack. His journey — from refugee camps to World Cups and global leagues — reflects resilience, adaptability, and relentless ambition.

Naveen-Ul-Haq’s Early Life and Background

Naveen-ul-Haq was born in Kabul, Afghanistan, but his early childhood was shaped by displacement. Soon after his birth, his family fled Afghanistan due to civil unrest and lived as refugees in Pakistan for several years. During this period, Naveen focused primarily on education, as his father — a doctor — strongly encouraged academics over sport.

Cricket entered his life through television. Watching international matches, particularly those featuring Indian fast bowlers like Zaheer Khan and Irfan Pathan, sparked his fascination with the game. Like many Afghan cricketers, he began with tape-ball cricket, initially as a batsman and wicketkeeper, and famously disliked bowling in his early years.

A turning point came after Afghanistan’s appearance at the 2010 T20 World Cup, which convinced Naveen that a professional cricket career was possible. Upon returning to Kabul, he joined the National Cricket Academy, where his raw pace and natural control immediately stood out. 

Within weeks, he was promoted to train with senior players and soon represented Afghanistan at the Under-16 level while still just 11 years old — a rare rise that set the tone for his rapid ascent.

Naveen Ul Haq’s Domestic and Franchise Career

Naveen-ul-Haq made his first-class debut in 2018 for Kabul Region in the Ahmad Shah Abdali Four-Day Tournament, gaining early exposure to red-ball cricket. Around the same time, he became a regular feature in Afghanistan’s domestic T20 structure, including the inaugural Afghanistan Premier League, where he represented Nangarhar.

His performances soon opened doors internationally. Naveen featured in the Bangladesh Premier League, Caribbean Premier League, Lanka Premier League, and England’s T20 Blast, building a reputation as a reliable death-overs specialist. A major highlight came in 2022, when he claimed his first five-wicket haul in T20 cricket for Leicestershire, returning exceptional figures of 5 for 11, underlining his ability to dominate even on batting-friendly surfaces.

Early in his career, the speedster had become one of the most travelled Afghan cricketers, gaining tactical awareness and adaptability through constant exposure to different leagues and conditions.

Naveen-Ul-Haq’s International Career

Naveen-ul-Haq’s international rise was swift and unconventional, marked by early leadership roles at the age-group level and senior exposure before turning 18.

Naveen-Ul-Haq’s ODI Career

Naveen-ul-Haq made his ODI debut against Bangladesh in September 2016, just days after turning 17. Before that breakthrough, he had already captained Afghanistan at the Under-19 Asia Cup, reflecting the team management’s confidence in his maturity and cricketing intelligence.

He went on to represent Afghanistan sporadically in ODIs before announcing his retirement from ODIs in 2023, following the ICC Cricket World Cup. His decision allowed him to focus entirely on T20 cricket, where his skill set was best suited.

Naveen-ul-Haq’s career also featured a notable off-field storyline involving Virat Kohli that eventually found resolution in international cricket. During the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup match between India and Afghanistan in Delhi, Kohli approached Naveen and shared a handshake and hug, publicly ending months of tension between the two players. The gesture was widely appreciated and symbolised sportsmanship, with Kohli even urging the crowd to stop chanting against the Afghan pacer, bringing a respectful close to the rivalry on the international stage.

In ODIs, Naveen was viewed as a developing pace option — a bowler capable of movement upfront and control in the middle overs — before shifting his full attention to the shortest format.

Naveen-Ul-Haq’s T20I Career

Naveen-ul-Haq made his T20 debut in January 2017 against Namibia, but it wasn’t regarded as an international affair. Although he debuted officially in T20Is against Bangladesh two years later. Since then, he has been a regular selection in Afghanistan’s T20I squads, valued for his variations, accuracy, and ability to bowl under pressure.

He represented Afghanistan at the 2021, 2022 and 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cups, with the 2024 edition standing out as a career-defining tournament. Naveen finished as one of Afghanistan’s most impactful bowlers, delivering match-winning spells against teams like Uganda and New Zealand, and playing a vital role in Afghanistan’s historic run to the semi-finals.

Although he was initially named in Afghanistan’s squad for the 2026 T20 World Cup, an injury setback ruled him out with a stress fracture in his right shoulder. Even so, his T20I career remains a testament to his effectiveness as a modern fast bowler who relies on intelligence rather than sheer pace.

Naveen-Ul-Haq’s IPL Career

Naveen-ul-Haq entered the Indian Premier League in 2023, when he was signed by Lucknow Super Giants at his base price. He made an immediate impact, including a memorable four-wicket haul in the Eliminator against Mumbai Indians, announcing himself as a big-match bowler.

Across the 2023 and 2024 IPL seasons, Naveen-ul-Haq picked up 25 wickets in 18 matches, emerging as one of LSG’s leading wicket-takers despite often bowling in high-risk phases of the game. 

One of the most talked-about moments of Naveen-ul-Haq’s IPL journey came during the 2023 season while representing Lucknow Super Giants against Royal Challengers Bengaluru. A heated on-field argument with Virat Kohli escalated during the post-match handshakes and later involved mentor Gautam Gambhir, resulting in fines for breach of conduct. 

The incident continued off the field through social media exchanges and crowd reactions across venues, making it one of the league’s most discussed controversies before eventually being resolved later that year.

Ahead of the IPL 2026 auction, Naveen-ul-Haq was released by Lucknow Super Giants. Entering the auction with a base price of INR 2 crore, he went unsold, with injury concerns and limited overseas slots affecting demand.
