Jack Edwards is an Australian batting all-rounder known for combining aggressive middle-order hitting with effective medium-pace bowling.
Tall and athletic, he developed from a promising New South Wales youngster into a multi-format cricketer, earning an Australia call-up and an IPL contract with Sunrisers Hyderabad.
His versatility — able to bat in different roles and contribute wickets — has made him one of the more adaptable young all-rounders in Australian cricket.
Jack Edwards’ Early Life and Background
Jack Edwards was born on April 19, 2000, in New South Wales, Australia, and grew up around Sydney’s Northern Beaches, an area known for producing competitive club cricketers. Cricket was a constant presence in his childhood, largely because of his family’s sporting background.
His father, Brad Edwards, had played as an all-rounder, while his older brother, Mickey Edwards, also pursued a professional cricket career. The two brothers frequently played backyard matches growing up, shaping Jack’s competitive approach from an early age.
In 2018, they became the first brothers to represent New South Wales together since the Waugh twins — a milestone that reflected how deeply cricket ran in the household.
He studied at St Augustine’s College in Brookvale and developed through the Manly Warringah District Cricket Club, a well-known pathway in Australian domestic cricket. Starting his junior cricket at Beacon Hill, he progressed steadily through representative teams and was eventually part of Australia’s Under-19 setup. Those formative years saw him identified as a long-term prospect, initially as a technically sound batter before he later evolved into a full all-rounder.
Jack Edwards’ Domestic Career
Before entering senior domestic cricket, Jack Edwards was part of Australia’s Under-19 setup and featured in the 2018 Under-19 World Cup campaign, where the team reached the final. At that stage, he was primarily viewed as a top-order batter, known more for technique than power.
The exposure to international junior cricket helped him adapt to higher pace and different conditions early, laying the foundation for his later transition into a full all-rounder at the professional level.
Edwards made his first-class debut for New South Wales during the 2018-19 Sheffield Shield season and his T20 debut for the Sydney Sixers soon after. Early in his career, he played primarily as a top-order batter, but injuries and team balance gradually pushed him toward becoming a genuine all-round option.
He made headlines at the age of 18 years, by becoming the youngest player to score a century in Australian domestic one-day cricket with a 116 against Queensland, while also ranking among the youngest centurions in New South Wales first-class history. Over the following seasons, he grew into a core member of both the NSW side and the Sydney Sixers.
The transformation into a complete all-rounder became clear from the 2023-24 season onwards, when he began contributing regularly with the ball in the BBL. By the 2025-26 Big Bash League season, he emerged as one of the competition’s leading wicket-takers with 19 scalps, including a five-wicket haul against Sydney Thunder. Alongside his bowling, he shifted into a middle-order finishing role and produced several quick scoring cameos.
His performances across formats were rewarded when he won the Steve Waugh Medal as New South Wales’ player of the year in 2025 and was entrusted with leadership responsibilities, including captaining the state’s one-day side and the Prime Minister’s XI.
Jack Edwards’ International Career
Jack Edwards’ international career began after consistent domestic performances elevated him from Australia A and age-group cricket into the senior setup.
Viewed as a developing all-round option, selectors have used him primarily in white-ball squads, valuing his flexibility to contribute with both bat and ball. His early appearances reflect Australia’s approach of grooming multi-skilled cricketers capable of filling multiple roles across formats.
Jack Edwards received his first senior national call-up during Australia’s 2025 tour of India, joining the squad for the final ODI. While still early in his international journey and yet to make his ODI debut, the selection reflected his growing reputation as a utility all-rounder.
Edwards made his T20I debut on January 29, 2026, against Pakistan and is the only international game he has featured in so far. The opportunity followed strong domestic performances, in which he proved capable of contributing in both departments rather than being a single-skill player.
Jack Edwards’ IPL Career
Jack Edwards is set to begin his Indian Premier League journey with Sunrisers Hyderabad after being bought for INR 3 crore at the 2026 auction. The signing came after competitive bidding against CSK, and he stood out as one of the few emerging overseas players to attract strong interest.
For Hyderabad, his value lies in flexibility — a batter who can adapt to different positions and a seam option who provides balance to the XI. The IPL season offers him a platform to translate domestic consistency into performances on a global stage while gaining experience in varied conditions.
