Azmatullah Omarzai is an Afghan all-rounder who has rapidly risen as one of the most impactful modern cricketers from Afghanistan. Hailing from the Nurgal District of Kunar Province, Omarzai has developed into a dependable middle-order batter and a skilful seam bowler capable of making key breakthroughs with the new ball and at the death.
Known for his power-hitting, athletic fielding, and consistent pace bowling, Omarzai is widely regarded as one of Afghanistan’s most valuable all-format all-rounders in the current era.
Azmatullah Omarzai’s Early Life and Background
Azmatullah Omarzai was born on March 24, 2000, in the Nurgal District of Kunar Province in eastern Afghanistan, a region heavily affected by conflict and instability. His childhood was shaped by security restrictions that often limited outdoor activities to daylight hours.
Initially, Omarzai was more inclined toward football, but a turning point came in 2014 when Afghanistan defeated Bangladesh in the Asia Cup. Seeing his father celebrate this historic victory inspired him to take cricket seriously and pursue it professionally. From that moment, he shifted his focus entirely toward the sport.
Azmat began playing tape-ball cricket in the streets alongside his elder brothers, where he first developed as a leg-spinner before gradually transitioning into an all-rounder, who could bowl handy seam. His natural athleticism, discipline, and adaptability helped him progress quickly through Afghanistan’s youth cricket system.
Within just four years of formally taking up cricket at the age of 14, Omarzai represented Afghanistan at the Under-19 level. His rapid development at the junior level paved the way for his entry into domestic cricket, where he soon established himself as a promising all-round talent.
Azmatullah Omarzai’s Domestic Career
Azmatullah Omarzai entered Afghanistan’s domestic circuit at a young age, making his List A debut for Mis Ainak Region in the 2017 Ghazi Amanullah Khan Regional One Day Tournament on August 10, 2017. The following year, he made his first-class debut for Speen Ghar Region in the Ahmad Shah Abdali 4-day Tournament on March 25, 2018, showcasing his potential as a genuine all-rounder.
His performances in domestic cricket earned him recognition in Afghanistan’s franchise leagues. In 2018, he was named in Paktia’s squad for the inaugural Afghanistan Premier League and made his T20 debut for Paktia Panthers later that year. Over time, he developed into a dependable middle-order batter and a disciplined seam-bowling option. His breakthrough came in the 2020 Shpageeza Cricket League, where he emerged as the joint Player of the Tournament, highlighting his consistency and match-winning ability.

His performances peaked in 2024, a year that defined his career, as he amassed 417 runs at an average above 50 while also picking up 17 wickets.
His standout performances earned him the prestigious ICC Men’s ODI Cricketer of the Year award in 2024, making him the first Afghan player to achieve this honour. He was also instrumental in Afghanistan’s campaign in the 2023 ODI World Cup, where he played several match-defining innings.
On 9 February 2024, Azmatullah Omarzai produced one of the finest ODI innings in Afghanistan’s history during the first match against Sri Lanka in Pallekele. Walking in with Afghanistan struggling at 55/5 while chasing 382, he stitched together a remarkable 242-run sixth-wicket partnership with Mohammad Nabi, the highest ODI partnership for any wicket in a losing cause and a new Afghanistan record.
Omarzai scored an unbeaten 149 off 115 balls — his maiden ODI century and one of Afghanistan’s highest individual ODI scores — guiding the recovery for more than 31 overs before the side finished on 339/6. Despite the effort, Afghanistan fell short by 42 runs, but the stand remains the second-highest sixth-wicket partnership in ODI history and a defining moment in Omarzai’s career.

He played a significant role in Afghanistan’s historic run to the semi-finals of the 2024 T20 World Cup, delivering key performances with bat and ball. His composure under pressure, power-hitting ability, and disciplined bowling in the death overs have made him one of Afghanistan’s most trusted T20 all-rounders.
